Barrett Rifles

I just watched a show about Barrett and it was neat to see. Each rifle is built by a single gunsmith from start to finish. No assembly lines. Ronnie Barrett invented the M82 (which is called the M107 by the military) when he was only 28 years old.

On top of that all the M107 rifles the US military uses are sent back to Barrett for repair, and they are all repaired by one man (according to the show) who is an Ex-Marine.

What's cool is the Ex-Marine one day got a call from a USMC sniper who was in the middle of a firefight in Afghanistan! The Sniper's Barrett M107 was malfunctioning. Meanwhile the shooting could be heard over the phone. So the Ex-Marine told him how to fix it. Took about a minute to fix, then the Barrett fired a couple shots, the Sniper said he had to go cause he had other things to worry about, then hung up.

Did I also mention Ronnie Barrett has a daughter? Angela Barrett!

HAHAHA, I just watched that show too! And yes, he does have a very good looking daughter! I like the 25mm version of the M107 they were showing. Finally a rifle designed to defend against bears on the moon!

You tube it. I just watched last night strangely enough too. It's a lot of hype for the name. I have some other differing opinions but I'll leave it at that.

Just remember, it's 4lbs lighter..

Cool but you can tell they are really pushing those 4lbs as a selling feature. Not only that but how many multi-caliber take-down bolt actions rifles are there out there now?

The M107 is a semi auto though, not a bolt. They are also pushing that weight drop because that's what soldiers wanted. The standard M107 can be up to 33lbs. 4lbs doesn't sound like much but it can mean a lot when you're packing one of these rifles over the mountains.

Also Barrett is one of the most accurate semi auto .50 BMG Sniper rifles there is.

And it happens to be the only .50 BMG Sniper Rifle in use by the US Military

I'm pretty sure it is, but I'm not sure what's cooler, the call itself or the fact that the repair guy knew exactly where the problem was just by the Soldier telling him what it was doing. You KNOW that guy knows his rifle; ever screw, rivet and bend in the sheet metal.

If done correctly it can be extremely strong, due to the heavy cross rolling it goes through it can be MUCH more durable than billets or anything else.

Keep in mind the AK47's and HK G3's (both still in use by many nations) are both sheet metal and built like tanks. The M-107 I believe uses thicker sheet metal than that, as well as re-enforced with guide rails and all that stuff.

Would you care to elaborate please? Not trying to start a flame war or anything but other than the weight issue all I hear / read about are positive comments.

I've got limited experience with Barret rifles : shot the .50 & .416 out to 700m on several occcasions in variopus conditions and both were plenty accurate. Nothing too fancy compared to a personal custom build for civvy use but built like a tank for sure. I've never humped one though so maybe that would change my opinion somewhat.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on it.

I owned a Barrett rifle. The M99 chambered in 416 Barrett. I don't think I would ever buy another Barrett rifle. Lowest quality rifle I have ever owned.

I'll second that, this is the first i've ever heard bad about them, and dirtee seems to take pretty significant issue with them. "Lowest quality ever owned" is pretty damming and definitively warrants some elaboration.
