Barrett Rifles

I guess to make it short and simple. You get what you pay for, there is a reason this rifle is one of the least expensive 50BMG rifle you can buy.

Comparing something like say a Steyr HS50 for example to a Barrett is kinda like comparing a $1,800 dollar weatherby to a rifle that you can buy for $600 with a scope on it.

Sometimes though you are only looking for the $600 dollar rifle because of what you intend to do with it, that's we're the Barrett fits in.

I wish I would have taken more close up pictures when I owned the Barrett, it would have been much easier to show you then to try to explain it to you. Steyr comes with a 5 piece machined aluminium with steel insert muzzle brake with nice square corners and anodized black. The thing is perfect. Barrett you get a one piece cast muzzle brake with air bubbles in the cast, rough edges that you can still see we're they roughly ground down the worst spots. Steyr has a nice bolt with a nice machined and threaded bolt handle. Barrett you get a bolt with a cast bolt knob that's not even round and its just welded to the bolt and they don't even bother to remove most of the welding splatter. The linkage for the trigger in the Barrett is lose and slops around and when you pull the trigger it kinda feel similar to dragging your finger nails across sand paper. The chassis for the Steyr is multiple pieces all precisely machined and fitted together with alan head machined screws. The Barrett they just drill a couple rough holes and put some push pins through it................. Anyways, you get the point. The entire rifle is like this, the barrel, the horrible floppy light weak wobbly bipod, the crappy paint job that a lot of has rubed off just inside the case when they shipped it...................

You want a nice looking precision made rifle, this is not the unit for you. You want something cheep and fun to play with that still shoots pretty well then this could be a good option.

I personally would rather pay a little more and get a rifle that functions a little nicer and looks nicer, in general is just a better over all quality rifle.

You are comparing apples and oranges here. I have both a Steyr HS 50 and a Barret Model 99. One is a entry level rifle for $4300 the other is a is a mid level Precision rifle for $6000. They are what they are, both do the job that they are built for. If you want a high end 50 you pay $14000 plus. this is like comparing a GM car to a Cadillac the GM will do the job but the Cadillac is much nicer. That said I enjoy shooting both rifles, but I would not use either if I wanted to seriously compete with it. PS as far as the Bipod goes I like the Barret better, but thats just me.

There are many of us who actually own 50s that would disagree with this AND that can back it up.

Actually I'd truly like to know and I'm not being sarcastic. Haven't heard to too many other semi-auto .50 BMG rifles. The M107 is used by 40 or so countries around the world. That has to say for something though. I know the McMillan Tac-50 is supposed to be more accurate but that is also a bolt action.

Thanks for the insight. As mentioned I have limited experience with these rifles (or any other in these calibers for that matter). I appreciate your input.

The AS50 and even the M2HB with optic is more accurate by far. Now granted the AW is more expensive, but the M2 CERTAINLY is not. The optic and mount is more expensive than the gun is.

I think he was maybe meaning to say the AS50 not the AW50. Maybe there was a semi auto AW50 also I don't know. The AS50 was advertised as 1.5 MOA guarantee compared to the Barrett that is advertised as 2.5 MOA guarantee.

Thank you. Yes I meant the AS50

And despite Barretts 2.5 MOA claim I have yet to find that particular rifle. Every Barrett 50 that I have ever shot certainly fell far short of that sort of accuracy.

I've heard that one engineer had really good ideas for the M82/M107 for hand fitting the barrel bushing which would have cut their group sizes in half, but the management wasn't interested in the idea at all. Obviously with the moving barrel any play in the bushing for it would kill the accuracy.
