Barrie provincials - match comments + some results now too

Thats fine if you feel that way, just don't ask for match comments. Please next time carefully mark the thread "Say nice things about our match to boost our ego and blow sunshine up our ass." You want match comments, I gave you match comments. Learn to take a little criticism... I think you guys need to suck it up and stop taking things personally.

The rain is one thing, 12 hours of waiting is the main problem, obviously one no one wants to address.

It takes alot of effort to put 245 shooters through...and there's never enough help...

So tell me ...what day did you stay to help out??

Not to hijack the thread, but out of curiosity how is it done in Ontario? We just had our Provincials in Alberta, obviously a lot less shooters (98 to your 250 or so) but how it was done here is everyone shoots a half day and works a half day for BOTH days. If you shoot the morning on Saturday you work the afternoon Saturday then the reverse on Sunday so work the morning and shoot the afternoon.

With every shooter (supposed to be) there for both days and having to work a half day each day it went quite smoothly. Still a long day but at least 90% of the people contributed (the remaining 10% being those people who think they are above the law and don't work their two work shifts like they are supposed to).

Yeah, no kidding, plus let's be honest, EVERYONE knows that Saturday will be the busiest day, so if that's the day you want to shoot, well, you should know what you're getting yourself into. Perhaps the organizers should have been turning people away, rather than trying to accomodate almost everyone who came calling, but then it might have been you who got cut/turned away, so others wouldn't have to wait as long. Would you have prefered that?

You always could take a day off work, and shoot on a Thur or Fri, when there were no delays, right? To help spread the load of shooters across the whole competition... No? You don't want to do that, you just want to come when it's most convenient to you, shoot, and leave, without really helping out at all? That's fine, there is no requirement to help, but if your contribution is so low and if you come on the busiest day, I really fail to see how you can have any basis for #####ing about a long day. So it was 2.5h longer than when we shot on Thur, with 6 person squads. Maybe you need to adjust your expectations...

Well if definatly doesn't work like that here ;)

I don;t think there's an easy answer when you have 200 plus shooters at a match...

I like the idea of a multi day commitment...but that would cause alot of pushback...

Cheers

Sounds like you are the one taking things personal. No body is asking you blow any thing up any body's ass.

Remember there almost was not going to be a provincials untill the people from barrie steped up to the plate.

I do not know if you have or have not held put on matches. If you have great keep going. If you have not maybe you should go out and offer a hand with a level 2 to see the kind of work needed to put on a match. You never know you be the person that figures a way to get every body through faster;)

Once again just my 2 cents

Well Omen and Quigley this is how We from the PF&GA did things and it worked out quite nice for all of us. Both the Range masters and the shooters.
We took a day off and shot during the week when Yes things were a little less hectic and we worked when we figured we were needed the most and when we would get the most experience ROing and running a match of this size. It seems to me that at every match there are some that are not happy or will complain about something that cuts to the quick ie. "wait times" The way I see it is you have to have a good attitude and it does not hurt to have been involved with a match this size to keep your constructive criticism to what really is constuctive. After all this is not a shoot and scoot kind of match . Just my thoughts

I've been in this sport a l-o-o-n-g time. By now I know that a large match takes a lot of work and there are a thousand unforseen things that can slow things down, let alone trying to run 250 shooters and give everyone enough time on the line that they don't feel rushed. I know that things happen, and sometimes long waits are inevitable, and I also know that the VOLUNTEERS are doing their level best to get the job done so everyone has a great time and so that they can enjoy things too. If I expect delays, I'll bring a book to read and a chair to sit in plus plenty of fluids and food so I don't get too wiped out standing around in the heat. Or I'll chat with my friends and just enjoy the company of people who share the same passion for the sport as I do.
I try to help as much as I can on the stage to keep things moving, and if everyone just does that then there should never be an unnecessary delay. Range equipment failures are another matter, but these issues are usually dealt with as quickly as is humanly possible. Beyond that..it is what it is and it'll get done when it gets done. I'm there to compete, and carping about things that are beyond anyone's control is just useless negativity, and counter productive to the mind-set that is needed to win a match.
Sunday was great. With the smaller squads everything ran pretty much like clockwork, but then, I knew that it would be like that going in.

I have put on my 7 layer Nomex suit and installed Halon on my computer, so I can now post my opinion of the match.

I thought the stages we’re a lot of fun, and well thought out. It did however take 12 hours to complete. Here below are the highlights.

The majority of the RO’s were very friendly. One was kind enough to give me a lesson on why I shouldn’t coach a 70 year old man who was now at 80 seconds on a 14 second stage and how I could be given a procedural for disregard of the rules. I think he finished 53rd in production so I do apologize to the person he beat, as my help surely gave him an unfair advantage. I do understand with out rules it would be chaos, but I think the entire squad was aware he needed some support and encouragement as he is new to the sport. I think a small minority of RO’s need to realize that we are customers and should be treated as such

The now infamous 70 year old (new to IPSC) shooter walked too close to another squad while they were patching on stage 1. He was chastised because he was not with that squad and told to promptly leave. I am of course paraphrasing; the exact words and tone were more disparaging. This was not a RO, but a very seasoned competitor, I did not say good, just seasoned.

I started the day on stages 9, and 10, did 11 and finished shooting 12 at lunch time. I was told we needed to shoot 1 & 2 before we can go to lunch? We shot those stages lethargic due to lack of food (I was starving!) Why couldn’t we go to lunch at lunch time? This one I don’t get. I feel for PMT as he did not even get lunch as they ran out during the day. I guess you need to bring lunch even when they say lunch will be served?

We returned from lunch to shoot stage 3& 4, but we had no RO’s, they showed up an hour later.

Our group was finishing on stage 8, with 3 shooters to go when the cable frayed and needed to be replaced. It was now around 7:30. We were encouraged to stay and help patch (there were seven papers targets on this stage?) so I stayed waited for the repair and applied six patches during my hour long wait. I tried to apply more but there was more than enough help for seven targets. We finally finished off at 8:30pm.

The patching thing seems to be a sore point, I am always one to patch but would not mind paying more at a match if I did not have to. I do not understand why they cannot pay someone to patch. 2 people on each range with patch guns could easily follow the RO’s as they called out each target. This is the Provincials, so why not? The cost for 12 people (2 per range) @ $10.00 per hour (8 hour day) for four days $3,840.00 plus workers comp approx. 4% 153.60 = $3993.60 divided by 245 shooters is $16.30. I would gladly pay that to speed up the match.

I say the above not to whine, but bring up the point that they could have catered a bit more to their customers. Also seasoned competitors need to realize new people should be treated with respect. I have brought 2 new shooters to IPSC this year (the infamous 70 year old and a business assoc.) and have 2 more waiting for a BB course. The sport needs new people. Mobil 1’s comment of “pick a different sport” is very short sighted. I seem to remember during the election we we’re looking for all the friends we could find?

Thanks for your time, give me a moment to slip on my fire retardant gloves as I cannot type with them on.

Kirk

I dont mind patching, but i would gladly pay an extra $20.

With regards to food and beverages, if i can i will bring my own like Rob. It might not be as convienent but i can eat anytime and sure will taste allot better.

Most guys need to lighten up and put a smile on during the match. Most guys are really too wound up.

I usually take a water bottle or Gatorade with me, and a granola bar/ snickers bar in case we go thru lunch or if I need a little sugar. We have a lot smaller squads usually in Atlantic Canada.

New shooters should be helped more, and encouraged. You don't want a new shooter being chastised at his first match. We want to increase our numbers, not push anyone away.

don't worry, be happy ;)

If you are going to quote get it right. I did not just tell him to " pick a different sport" I said if you do not like waiting or getting rained on you mite want to take up another sport. I meant nothing derogative in my remarks that is just how the sport is.

Or are you one of these people that would rather sit back and be negative about every thing? If this is the case I do not think I am the one that is short sighted.

Mobil 1 am neither short sighted or negative, that is why I decided to post.

I apologize if I misquoted you.

I am new to the sport, been in it just over a year. I posted because I have become tired of watching people I have introduced to the sport treated on more than one occasion with a lack of respect and talked down to. So I decided to bring this up. The title of the thread was comments re. the provincials.

I want to introduce many more of my friends to this sport and am trying to be constructive. The more enjoyable an event is, the more people you will attract to the sport.

I hold a genuine concern the liberals will once again take a run at our guns and sport. I think we need as many new members as possible. One of my recent IPSC shooter converts used to make comments like “why would you need a handgun” He voted conservative for the first time last election. Get my point?
