Basketweave type checkering

I had my Winchester Model 88 out for the hunt this fall and it received a couple of dings. I'm planning to refinish the stock this winter.

I was wondering if anyone knows how the original basket weave pattern was applied. Is it impressed into the wood with a die under pressure?

I'm concerned that the water based strippers that I prefer might raise the wood grain and destroy the pattern.

Has anyone had any experience with this problem?

It is my belief it was simply impressed into the wood. That might be a hard die to find.

So don't use a greenie water based stripper. Go with a nasty baby-seal killing eco-terrorist methyl chloride stripper. They probably work better, anyway

The stuff I have says specifically that it won't raise the grain
