Bass Pro Calgary...

Self serve ammo should be the first step in pleasing gun owners that's for sure. No more waiting an hour to get a box of shells.
Self serve reloading equipment with lots of inventory would make me smile. I've heard March 26 for a "Sneak a peeek" and April 9 for the official opener. Anyone else heard?

I went to Cabela's in Reno and was underwhelmed. Better selection of some things (camo and clothing) than WSS, but less of other things (like component bullets for reloading rifles). All in all, not as good as Wholesale IMHO, but that's just one store. Then again, I was there to go to the SCI convention and there's not much that can compare with that big to-do.

Ya, the Reno Cabela's definitely lacks the size and wow factor of most of their stores.

Don't compare a bass pro in the USA to what your going to see in Canada. If the one out west is anything like the one in Ontario you will be disappointed. They only have around 1/10th of the items in the Ontario one compared to a USA bass pro.

I have been to two different Bass Pro shops and their reloading supplies were very minimal to say the least.

As far as guns, shooting supplies, reloading, etc.. you cannot beat a Sportsmans warehouse.

It seems that Cabelas has the market share for clothing, camo, camping, boots, etc..

Really looking forward to see if the Bass Pro here will have more specialty items, especially shooting and reloading.
Excited to see their fly shop as well.

If you ignore all of the Wholesale sports bashing that seems to be the rage as of late they actually have greatly improved their product line. Great reloading supplies, lots of different brands of guns, camo, etc.. If they could just streamline the damn wait to get a box of bullets or powder......... It will be interesting to see if Bass Pro goes after the reloading market here?

I'm looking forward to having a store a little closer. As for the gun counter.....the bar in southern Alberta is set real low, BP will not have to do much to please all the Wholesale haters.

Want a ride on the magic bus? :D Leaves 8:30 sharp every morning. We have reloading benches mounted to the seats for those who can't wait to get home and we will also stop by the local gopher patches on the way home too.
:50cal:

As far as WSS bashing being the local rage it is well deserved. For so long they were the only show and they knew it. I wish they didn't own Russels....but that's for another thread.....

They will be offering reloading supplies. Not sure to what degree. It's my understanding that reloading sales in Calgary are a fraction of what factory ammo sales are and that the profit margins are much smaller.

Probably very true, which means one of two things: either WSS and Russel's will have to really beef up and focus on reloading even more than now, or they'll try to compete directly with BP and drop the reloading stuff down to make more room for... whatever the high profit margins are on... clothing?

I don't know what WSS is like if you walk in the front doors, but I have had it with them as far as mail order. I had my last bad experience with them around Xmas. You guys out west should welcome the competition with BPS.
They're not Cabelas, but they have some good sales. I make the trip north of Toronto many times.

I've never been in a Bass Pro, but I've recieved their catalouges since 1994. And I've only ever set foot in one Cabela's and for anyone who hasn't, it's an experiance not just a shopping outlet. I have high expectations that this new Bass Pro will rival the Cabela's store I was in. And everything I've heard says it will be just that, so I'm really looking foward to setting foot in that place.

Anyone who is interested, these are some of the photo's I took from there.

I've been in a number of American Cabela's and a couple of Bass Pro's, including the Canadian version of BP in Vaughan Mills just north of Toronto.

Mike mine Cabela's.
BP may be a competitor, but not a rival, IMHO.
... hope you guys out west aren't too disappointed.

Oh yeah, be prepared for a some good opening week deals ... they
seemed to manage to screw the pricing up pretty good with their
first Canadian store. I watched from about 3 back as two flats of 28 ga. AA's went through the till at $ 8.50 a flat, and have seen and heard of all kinds of irregularities since they first opened. In about a dozen trips through the Toronto location, I've yet had a store staff inquire as to "How may I help you ? " let alone
"Good morning" ... I'm not impressed. Just a "big box sporting goods" store.
Calgary has a couple of good shops I've been in with a better selection of fly-fishing gear !

I was in the Post Falls Idaho Cabela's last summer and the MC took a $hit kickin...............................Harold

I drive by it every day and I can't wait for it to open...... I can't wait to swap my business from Wholesale Sports AKA: "The Answer is no we don't have that in stock" I am counting the days as my shopping list gets longer :)

Good God! I just typed Balzac mega mall into google maps and it took me to a giant footprint. Is that really the size of this mall? It has the footprint of the flipping airport!

Yup, it's huge but mall won't open till August and racetrack and hotel at a later date.

BPS has good deals on stuff here and there. It's also fun to go and know that most ppl you bump into are going to have similar hobbies as you.

Just don't get any redhead gear and you'll be fine.
