BAT Actions

Thanks

Thankyou to everyone that responded to my post. Have multiple emails out to suppliers, and awaiting replies. Also looking at ATR's new action and the Barnards. I want a left handed action so that when I am fireing from the right handed position I never take my hand off of the stock and never brake cheek weld or shoulder position to chamber a round. Have had many "custom" rifles built, but all with factory (rem & sako) actions. I feel that it is time to take the next step and build something that is truly custom. So here I go, it is also time to thin the herd and move some of the other stuff out of the safe to build capitol. So keep an eye on the EE forum there could be some interesting stuff coming up... Again thanks to everyone that responded, Don.

Bat is pretty hard to beat!

Bat action are very nice to handle, also very smooth, but there is other choice, like surgeon, stiller, but what ever you decide to go with, do your research, it will pay off.
Oh they are way less than $2000.

I don't want to be that guy but here is a store about a few BAT actions that you might want to read. The short version is that the bolt tolerances were TOO tight and it was causing problems with even mild loads.

BAT has a very solid reputation and I wouldn't want you to be swayed by a few incidents this is an FYI

And the cure

Take Care

The tolerances are not too tight when made with the right materials and Barnards have tighter tolerances than your average BAT. I know of several well recognized rifle smiths that have had to deal with barrels stuck in BAT actions, the only cure was to cut it off and machine it out. One customer was know to clean all that messy anti-seize off a barrel before he turned it in and made his switch barrel one barrel short. They are very soft and from the factory they come lubed with anti-seize which works well for any action but is absolutely required on a BAT.

I agree that there is alot of internet myth to contend with, that being said we have experienced a real issue with galling on actions made from 17-4.
We had several Nesika actions require replacement from bolt lugs galling badly into the actions. I have seen a few BAT actions that had galling to a degree as well.
I believe the this problem is partly due to operator error, in running fairly hot loads, and not keeping the bolt lugs greased or lubricated.
Galling can and does occur on CM actions if hot loads are used continuously and lubrication is denied to the parts.
The BR crowd has been using both BAT and Nesika for many years as you know, with not a tremendous issue. I believe the serious BR guys seem to be more into surgical clean of rifles and as they tend to run calibers that normally run 50000 CUP or less pressures they may not be experiencing the failures that running hotter cartridges that run 60000 CUP or more will have.
So knowing the potential issues makes it easier to avoid them.

What type of grease/lubricante do you recomend for a stainless action? Rem 700.

Why spend $2000 on a copy when you can get an Original for alot less, Rem 700SPS varmint is by far the best way to go, the Action are very easy to deal with, part are easy to get, why complicated youself, The hole is already dug, all you have to do is Throw in the Cash, why trouble yourself digging another hole, and throw in the Cash.
