Battle Damaged Enfields?

Battlefield salvage rifles, British and German, awaiting sorting out in the Somme region.

Interesting they are packed barrel down into the dirt, suppose they came out of mud, so no issue.

I know this is on Enfield's, only battle damage rifle I have is a Boer Mauser, it's great to see some Enfield's around like this as reminders of the horrors.

There was an article in one of those volumes about a SMLE that had an 8mm bullet lodged in the barrel and when the LE was fired, the action blew up. It may be the same rifle described by Mr. Laidler above. I will try to dig up the article and pass it on to you.

Thanks partner ... :)

Got the article and sized each page the best I could to enable people to be able to read it on-line as image fileds. Each page was still 2 megabytes. :D

However, I did create an additional Adobe PDF file which folks can download for easier off-line reading.

It is the same rifle as in Peter's original article. Even talks about Westminister in it ... ;)

It will make for a nice addition to the larger Knowledge Library piece we're developing. I just have to find an author/editor to compile all the aggregated material and write the broader article surrounding it all. Any volunteers? ;)

Interesting thread, thanks for taking the time to share.

Have you checked the war museums online archive of the small arms collection? wouldn't be surprised if their was more in there.

No, but that's a good idea.... :)

Lots of content waiting to be brought on-line and presented, but really short on volunteers to do so.

I would like to thank the volunteers who spent their school holidays scanning in the CEF attestation papers. I found my Gt Grandfathers in there.
Definetly something to do when I retire, volunteer put something back.
