Battle of Stalingrad

This is the best movie about Stalingrad that I have seen. Made by German filmakers from the German soldier's point of view, it is pretty gritty.

The movie Stalingrad is one of the best out there, in my opinion.

However, the "effects" of the movie leave a bit to be desired.
Other than that though, it's a much better movie than Ryan's Privates or whatever it's called.

Both the War of the Rats and Enemy at the Gates are crap. Somewhat decent book is Anthony Beevers Battle of Stalingrad. Most of the German troops had summer uniforms on, once they were surrounded they were doomed by the Goering's promise to keep the 6th army suppiled by air. Hitler should have allowed 6th Army to attempt a break out. The winter of 42 was one of the coldest even for Russian standards.

There never was a sniper duel like described in the movie.

Cheers

I agree, If your interested in Stalingrad read Anthony Beevers, but read his second book, The Road to Berlin as well. Both two of the most readable histories out there :dancingbanana:

They must be using this guy as an SPBU or "Self Propelled Bunker Unit". If he gets incapacitated they can still roll him around to wherever they need him for instant cover.

How did that guy pass the physical? He's such a big target I guess he takes all the fire from the enemy and saves his platoon.

there are all sorts of stories of how both sides on the eastern front kept their machinery running
-lighting fires under the fighters and tanks
-adding gas to the engine oil to make it thinner
-taking the oil out of the engines at night and keeping it next to the heaters/fire in the "barracks" and then putting it back in the engine in the morning

Yah the AR.com board has pages and pages and pages devoted to this character, and his buddies, and allot of funny photoshop work as well. :D

You read the book "Enemy at the Gates". The movie was based on the book but the movie only covered Vasilli the sniper. The book covers the whole battle for Stanligrad.

An excellent book, I read it several years ago.... and that's the main reason I didn't like the movie....

All Quite on the Russian Front is a very good book as well. Written by a German, and I think he lives in London Ont. now.

I watched the History Detectives about the battle of Stalingrad............

Actually, I think it's titled Battlefield Detectives and I saw the same segment. I thought it was pretty darn good as well. It's a series and I've seen another one on Gettysburg as well....

It's certainly worth setting up the PVR to look for them to auto record on the History Channel. :)

I do believe you are right on the "Battlefield Detective" name, it was a good program. I try to watch all the similar programs like the History Channel etc.:dancingbanana:
I like to see the old battle field strategies and the grainy old film clips from WW1.

I'd recommend that movie as well.

The Germans did not only eat horse meat, they also resorted to cannibalism. Small details such as Mausers or Mosins had little to do with the outcome of the battle - mass movements of armies determined the result. The Germans were generally superior in tactics, but strategically they didn't have a clue.

Well strategically Hitler didn't have a clue. The defeat of General Paulus can be largely attributed to Hitler's interference in military affairs.

Well you Gunnutz are 3 for 3 so far ("A Rifleman goes to War", "The Emma Gees", and "The Guns of August"), so as a result of this banter I have just ordered three more books from Amazon to keep me occupied:
  • Stalingrad The Fateful Siege 1942 To 1943;
  • Paris After The Liberation 1944-1949; and
  • Fall Of Berlin 1945
I trust that this Antony Beevor is all he's all cracked up to be. I just hope he doesn't keep me away from the Exchange Forum too much. ;)
