Cooey Model 84 vs. Baikal IJ 18 single shot shotgun shootout.

My Cooey 84 vs. the Baikal IJ-18

Round 1: Me with my cooey, my buddy with the baikal

Round 2: Switching guns (disaster for me!)

Cooey
Advantage: Ejector
Disadvantage: Have to #### trigger before firing

Baikal
Advantage: Ready to fire after barrel is closed
Disadvantages: Extractor, Awkward opening mechanism

I think reloading time would come down with practice handling the IJ 18, as I had no experience using the baikal before, and the under-lever opening mechanism was hard to get used to.

You can see the baikal has the advantage with the speed of the 1st shot, but the cooey quickly makes up time with the ejector.

Hunted deer with Artie. Artie is a gramps who has been using the same single shot cooey 12g shotgun on deer since he was 12. Would of sworn that someone with a pump or autoloader was shooting off to my left where Artie should of been with his single. When I asked they told me Artie was as fast as a pump or auto,,,, and as good a shot or better than most.

Watched him demonstrate the procedure:
One in the pipe, three shells with the brass between the fingers of his left hand.
Make the first shot,
left hand drops from the forearm, right thumb releases action,
empty ejects over the shoulder
left hand drops shell into chamber
right wrist snaps action closed
right thumb cocks hammer as left supports forearm
acquire target and fire
repeat procedure

When someone has only one shotgun and has used it for many years, chances are he KNOWS HOW TO USE IT WELL.
Miss hunting with the old boy

It's been said before, be wary of the man with only one gun. Cool story.

Looks like fun.
Do you happen to know where I would pick up a model 84 in 28 gauge?

I had 2 cooey single shot in .410, i loved but i still prefer my Baikal, better pattern, the oppening lever work better than my other IJ18 12ga. The 12ga was my father's shotgun. Really well finished and he rarely missed a shot with. For singles shot, for me no others than Baikal:) Also acquired a Baikal IJ58 sxs, ant wait to have fun with:D

yes that IJ18 has a crazy tight choke. It was making fist sized holes in the chip board wood from 20 yards away with #7.5 birdshot. I am sure I can get used to the opening lever with plenty of practice.

I got the baikal IJ58 recently too, dont use the cooey much anymore
