Hello All!

Well....between adjusting to life with two little kids and a work world that makes my head spin, I can't ever seem to get organized enough to go shoot service rifle or attend any of the 3gun or tactical rifles matches that happened this summer. How cr*ppy is that?!?!?!

Then watching all those folk with the various postal matches having all that fun, it dawned on me....why not try to organize the same thing something along the lines of a cross between service rifle and a tactical rifle match (my two favorite!)? How about an Online Battlerifle Match?

Here's the way it would work:

1. Go to the following directory http://www.eclecticworks.ca/targets and download the target (soldier_ak_8x14.pdf) by right mouse clicking and selecting "save target as".

2. Print the target off on a legal (8.5x14) sized piece of paper. The scoring zone should be approximately 3.4 inches wide.

3. At your own convenience and on the HONOR SYSTEM, go shoot the target according to the monthly match description. You can shoot each match three times if you like, or just once. Your best score will be what you submit.

4. Each target is to be shot with 20 rounds.

5. Target is to be shot from the position specified in the match description.

6. Take a photograph of your target and e-mail it to me. E-mail address is jason*REMOVE*"at"*REMOVE*eclecticworks.ca

7. Once a month I will score all the targets and compile scores which rank the standings. Scoring will be as follows: 1 point for rounds that fall within (even partially) the scoring zone, no points for rounds that don't. Maximum score for each round will be 20 + 1 bonus point.

8. Bonus point to be awarded if, when submitting target, you also include a photograph of you and your rifle.

9. Each month there will be a different match description. With August almost done, the first month will be September. League will run 6 months.

10. Final score will be the sum of the best 5 months (allowing one month of "no participation" for those who might not be able to find time one month or just simply shoot like cr*p one month).

11. Two classes of competition: one for .30 caliber battle rifles and one for everything else.

12. No dedicated bolt action sniper rigs allowed.

Once a month I will score all the targets and compile scores. If the match generates alot of interest, I will build a website to publish scores and monthly match information, address to be forthcoming shortly. Matches descriptions will try to borrow from both service rifle style competition and tactical rifle type stuff, match description to be posted the first week of the month. As the targets have to be able to be printed off a laser printer, maximum range will never exceed 100 yards. This will also allow for maximum participation as there are many who don't have access to longer ranges. There will be some stages at closer ranges. A wide variety of shooting positions will be dictated. Some physical activity may also be married with the shooting requirements.

September, 2007 Match description:

Target: 8.5x14 "Soldier with AK47"
Range: 100 yards.
Shooting Position: Sitting unsupported.
Maximum Number of rounds required: 20
Time limit: None

From the sitting unsupported position with target set up at 100 yards, fire 20 rounds for score.

And here's my first kick at the cat:

My Sept07 score: 14 + bonus point = 15

Good luck, and good shooting!

Can the rifle be scoped? Or am I goint to have to yank my scope off my M14 once a month to shoot the match? Seperate categories for guys with optics and not?

I see no reason why a scoped battle rifle should be excluded....it will be at a disadvantage for some of the close range tac rifle stuff though. Thoughts from others?

edited to add: ok...will differentiate in standings (via different class) between optics and irons. ALso, when submitting target via e-mail, also send info on where abouts you shot it...ie: provnice/country/state/etc, what type of rifle (ie: M1A, M1 Garand, Lee Enfield, AR15, Sig 500/PE90, etc etc and) and optics/irons.

Sounds like a great idea. A good description of the rules for each match would be needed. Being new to the service match style this would be a great way to get introduced and participate.

Lots more...some new ones to be posted shortly for the October Match! Just uploaded website for league:

I should be able to upload the October match description and targets within the next few weeks.

Good luck, and good shooting!

I am teh sux

Well, I thought I'd try this out considering that I own a (bone-stock) M305 and I had a box of Winchester 150-grainers that my rifle doesn't seem to like anyway kicking around.

So, I printed off the target and went out to Mission to shoot at it. Boy, what a learning experience.

First, I'm new -- very new -- and I've never shot from anything other than a bench before. So, learning to shoot a new rifle (I've only had 'er out four or five times!) in a new position was a big challenge, and is the biggest single reason I sucked so much. I was all over the place.

The other problem, besides my lack of skill, is that I discovered that the club doesn't allow silhouette shooting; so, after hanging my target, I was told to take it down. Fortunately, I was able to get ten rounds downrange at it in between cease fires. But, I wasn't given any time to do any sighting in. And without a spotting scope it's tough -- one has to shoot somewhat blind.

I found this quite difficult. The front post of my Norc iron sight is quite a bit bigger than the 8 1/2" paper at 100m.

All was not lost, however, as I received some tips from BCRA president Dave Adams, who happened to be there. We talked for a bit about service conditions matches and he gave me a few pointers on practicing for next year.

Finally, to top it all off I found that my digital camera batteries died after one photo -- so all I got is a picture of my shooting area.

Whee!

So, here's how I did:

Not especially great. That's three hits on the paper... all low, and none in the scoring area. And, since I don't even have a picture of myself and my rifle, I score a sweet-ass zero!

OldGravy: An extra 5 points to you for effort! I'll extend the september deadline for you so If you're able to get out and shoot again (in a spot that allows sillhouette shooting....what a lame rule!), even if it's in October, re-submit!

With respect to those irons: I have trouble that way too when shooting with my iron sighted clasic green. I find that the harder I concentrate on that front sight, the better I do.

Good luck!

I love these types of matches (already participating in Jamie's RTCC matches and the Sign Wave's Zombie Match.) they're just good ole simple fun!:D
I'm going to have a go at it. Thanks Brobee for organizing this!
BTW, Brobee, can you participate in each class? ie: irons and scopes, other rifles, etc?

EDIT:
Wow! I just saw your webpage for this match. That's awesome! Excellent work!

Orvis: Participation is not to steep right now so multiple entries across different classes is fine by me! If participation ramps up such that administering the match becomes alot of work then I might impose a single entry rule, however for now have at her! I'm actually thinking about doing the same thing....one entry for my scout scoped M1A and another for an iron sighted swiss classic green!

Good luck!
