Bausch & Lomb balvar

I was digging around in my old mans basement and found a Bausch&Lomb balvar 6-24x40mm scope with a 5 inch sunshade and what appears to be an "mx" reticle. It used to be on one of his metallic silhouette rifles. Anyone know what its worth? is it a good scope?

I had a Balvar 3-9x40 scope on a hunting rifle.It was very high quality.Hunted many years with it.The 3-9x40 used to sell for around $600 several years ago.I would say with out a dought it was a better scope than the 4200 series having owned a few of them as well.

Price would likely be in the $400-$500 range if in mint condition. I would say $600 would be a tough sell but you never know.

Didn't say to sell it used for $600 Thats roughly what they went for new.

Well she is in absolutly mint condition with the original box and velvet bag....but i wont be selling her. I have a nice accurized rem 700 in 6.5x55 that needs a scope.
 
Balvars were the top of the line Bausch & Lomb rifle scope. This was back when B&L owned Bushnell, which was a number of years ago, so today it would be comparable to the Elite 4000 series.FS
 
I have two X1.5-6 Balvars and never had a problem with them.
I prefer them to the Bushnell 3000 series that sort of replaced them...
 
Optically they are great scopes, bright and clear. Also very tough. The down sides for me (for hunting scopes) is that the adjustments are typically very sluggish (require a shot or three after an adjustment for them to fully move) and the fact that the entire ocular turns when changing power sorta precludes the use of Butler Creek flip-ups.

Nice scopes however, I prefer them to the Elites that replaced them. Much sleeker.
 
Hey hey not bad for a freebie eh! Its going to sit on my remmy 6.5x55 for now untill I get somthing along the lines of a savage 10FP or an LTR. Its a bit big for a sporter weight rifle, and I don't shoot much silhouette anymore...

I have one of these on my M70 .308 and have never had a problem with it. I like that it's compact with a straight 20mm objective lens. I wish Bushnell would make a new version of a 1.5-6x20mm in thier 3200 or 4200 line.

Not only in "their" day, but this day as well.

I have a 1.5x6. It is one of my all time favourite scopes and sits on my semi-custom Browning Safari 300H&H taking preference over several Vari-X/VX IIIs. There are bright, dependable, and clear edge to edge.

I have had a 3-9 x 40 on my mountain rifle for over 10 years. I bought it used. It is absolutely solid and has never lost its zero through some hard mountain hunts, falls, slips and everything else I have thown at it.

The adjustments are not precise, but once zeroed, it stays there. I would love to replace it with a lighter scope, but it too darned reliable, which is why it lives on my mountain rifle.
 
I have a 2.5-10 that I bought brand new 14 years ago. I had it mounted on my precision rifle and I found the clicks to be very consistent when I accounted for the fact that they were actually .36 minute, not 1/4 minute. I only need target scopes and the coin adjustments are a liability, but I never can bring myself to sell this one it because it really is such a reliable scope that makes it worth more than its resale value.
