Bavarian M1 Carbine value

Any one have any ideas on the value of a Bavarian Inland M1 carbine that has a 19 inch non restricted barrel. It has that mauser type sight and the original rear dovetail is filled . Looks like Really nice shape except for the sight change. also has 4 digits etched on various places.It comes with a pinned 5/30 magazine. I have been offered this in trade but don't know a value.

I believe it depends on the 19" barrel. There are several varieties.

1) New Criterion made barrel (best)
2) Plainfield made barrel with brazed-on gas cylinder (OK, but not great)
3) National Ordnance with welded-on cylindrical-shaped gas cylinder (better than brazed, but not the best)
4) USGI stub sleeved onto .30 cal barrel blank - can be great or terrible, depending who did the work. The best jobs are soldered and pinned with a tight sleeve job. I would not run one of these barrels PERSONALLY unless they were both pinned and soldered or brazed.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the bavarian sight arrangement, their value seems to be to collectors, not shooters, so original barrel would be preferred.

Assuming it's a criterion barrel, I'd say it's a $1000 gun. Anything other than Criterion, knock $200 off that for starters.

No its a solid barrel no welding brazing soldering or pinning etc. I would not be interested in it at all except it is non-restricted. I may be mistaken but I think the guy said the barrel is Erme -werk ?? German to? sounded like that

If it's an Erma-Werke, it is a .22 LR replica. There were no non-US manufacturers of M1 Carbines, however many police and other law and military units in west germany used M1 Carbines and many were remarked with agency markings.

No it was an Inland marked 30 cal ; I have seen a few M1 look alike 22's. I called him last night and it has a push button safety and clip release not a flip lever safety if that means anything.He seems to think it is an early model Inland all original save for this vee sight and 19 inch barrel.
Might take it if the price seems right; I imagine I can always sell it

Well, as I said, much would depend on the barrel. Were I you, I would ask him to pop the barrelled action out of the wood and take pictures of the gas cylinder area and around the front sight of the barrel, as well as any markings.

I've never heard of a real military barrel that's 19" long. If the barrel is longer than 18", the bayonet could not be mounted when these were rebuilt post-war - so the military ones are almost all the same length as USGI, even if made abroad.

Of course, I stand to be corrected.

Here is a sight dedicated to the sight-altered Bavarian carbines, though not all Bavarian-used guns were so altered. No mention of a new, longer barrel on any of them that I can see.

emphasis mine - not correct, M1 carbines were made in Japan between about 1952 and the mid-sixties, in both military and civilian versions, by Howa.
 
Most people are under the impression that all Bavarian marked carbines had the rear sight base milled off and a tangential style sight mounted on the barrel where it meets the receiver.

I have a Winchester made Bavarian Rural Police marked M1 Carbine that has the two position rear mounted style sight, no bayo lug. Nice rifle. The only thing that sets it apart is the "BAVARIAN RURAL POLICE" stamp on the top of the left side of the receiver.

Some collectors will pay a premium for the Bavarian marked rifles but not that much. Condition is everything.
 
Thank-you for that Bavarian web page; lots of good info there. Had some pics of this gun sent to me and looks like an early Inland with flat bolt and push button safety ; first 3 digits are 496, the wood handguard is the early 2 hole model and last 4 digits of serial number I presume are stamped in stock and on bolt, oh and crossed cannons on stock.
Actually looks real good and the fact it is non restricted USGI save for sght and barrel I think will be a plus in the years ahead especially with the political goings on now.
He wants $800. on the trade with me so I think that's probably fair.

Yeah, I have a Bavarian-issue Quality Hardware with a Criterion barrel on it (now). Never had the sight mod - only sign of Bavarian history is a 3 with a circle around it stamped on the receiver heel.
