I recently acquired a bayonet for my 1884 Springfield Trapdoor antique, it's rusty with some pitting and I'm looking for suggestions on how to shine it up without wrecking it.
Also mechanism that mounts it to the barrel of the rifle has been torqued a little - see attached pic. Would it be safe to heat it up to try and straighten it and would a propane torch we able to do this?
See the area circled in red , the slot for the sight has been pinched at the top and it looks to me like this is being cause by a small bend in that neck area on the bayonet.
