I was watching a movie last night and I noticed a soldier put his bayonet on his modern ar rifle?

Then I did a little googling and it seems that current USMC soldier still get issued bayonets. The Ontario Knifes OKC3S.

What is the purpose of a bayonet on a modern rifle? To scare the enemy?

Its used for drill, it's has in intimation factor, and used in close quarter battle. I do believe the British army or royal marines did use bayonets in fighting in Iraq 10 years ago or so. It also looks really really cool :)

A bayonet is an inexpensive way to give you an additional CQB weapon that is silent, requires no ammunition, needs almost no maintenance, and has standoff range. If you're going to be issued a knife anyhow it makes sense to adapt it to the rifle as well.

A bayonet makes a rifle a stand off weapon(Spear) instantly, no matter what condition your firearm finds itself in(empty/stopped?) when it's a CQB situation, that a knife alone can never replace. Unless of course your Rambo.

Can't imagine anyone not wanting the option on a Service Rifle. Fix Bayonet's Lad's. They're not coming through us................

Research has shown that it is better than poking the enemy in his tummy with your barrel.

The bayonet is still issued in certain military organisations for the purpose of killing the enemy when you are committed to a Close Quarter Battle in the conventional battle space.

It has been used to good effect by the Argyl & Sutherland Highlanders in Iraq a few years back where they were running low on ammo, they re-orged the ammo to the guys running the L86s and L108s and then affixed bayonets. Once they began the bayonet charge, the insurgents broke and ran.

As I said, in the conventional battle space the bayonet still has a place, hell, it might never be found obsolete.

Besides, if you were standing there, with one or two rounds of ammo left in your AK and the open desert at your back when you saw sixty men stand up as one, let out a typically angry Jock howl of defiance/rage and charge at you with pointy sticks, what would you do, really? Don't forget, you can still hear the crack of rounds incoming...

Most modern bayonets also have handles and double as a survival knife.

Also bayonets work wonderful in close quarter combat, such as while in a house, building or other cramped quarters and you don't have time to say... "would you not shoot or otherwise engage me while I reach for another mag" ... enemies tend to say no in those situations... so just stick 'em :)

Also what if you wanted to kill someone while creeping up on an enemy position but didn't want to give up your position

and of course the most important reason for having a bayonet.... they are friggin' cool :)

Bayonets are completely and utterly worthless in a modern army...

...Right up until you've just emptied your magazine, the bad guy's 4 feet away, and you need to deal with him right freaking NOW.

Always better to have the option and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Because modern military rifles make very poor cubs, no bullets not good for much else but a spear.

Try doing this without a bayonet...

If I recall correctly the American Army has recently stopped or is going to stop bayonet fighting training. They deemed it a skill not worth training for as bayonet fighting never happens anymore. They were still going to issue the knifes and the rifles still will have the lugs. However the training time in boot camp is being allocated for other more important skill training.
