Bayonets.....But why?

I was watching a movie last night and I noticed a soldier put his bayonet on his modern ar rifle?

Then I did a little googling and it seems that current USMC soldier still get issued bayonets. The Ontario Knifes OKC3S.

What is the purpose of a bayonet on a modern rifle? To scare the enemy?

How old are you?

The zombies vid was unrealistic :(

1) The ax was WAAAAAY too light
2) He was only giving the zombies love-taps, not real strikes (wouldn't have put them down and if he did hit'em hard enough to put'em down, he'd have got tired after 5-10 assuming the ax didn't dig into the bone at any point)
3) He wasn't running an autoloader with a dot. I know at least 15 people around my club that would have cleaned up this horde with a 10/22 running a TRS-25 :D [and I'm sure there are a lot more, but I'm just talking about the people who have demonstrated the skill in my presence]
4) I'd carry a loaded BX-25 over a bayo any day of the week

Probably the best purpose of a bayonet on a modern rifle today is for weapon retention; someone will be much less likely to try and grab your rifle from you when faced with the business end of several inches of sharp steel coming at them.

Try shooting said person, its far more effective than trying to stab them. Firearms are distance weapons which afford you the option of being a great distance from your opponent, the same is not true for bayonets.

Accepting that common sense and ROEs mean you can't always just shoot people, sometime you just need to encourage them to move along and stay well out of arms reach.

Common sense would also indicate that if you might be forced to shoot with a bayonet fixed you should get used to it on a square flat range first.

Nothing says our backs are against the wall and we wont go down without a fight like:"Fix bayonets!"
imagine the hajis seeing his buddy haji skewered and 1/4 turn by a screaming infidel with blood dripping down from his rifle barrel.
Scary stuff

Generally speaking, that's it - a bayonet charge is a gigantic FU with lots of blood. Also, bayonet charges get you written into history, after all who would have heard of Camerone without the bayonet charges?

Long range shooting is strictly business decisions.

However for Canadian infantrymen, bayonet use tends to be more for job satisfaction.
Scientific testing reveals that they get far more of a sense of fulfillment than the guy shaking the Little Caesars sign on the road.
So quoteth Ron Charac,,,.

........all that stood between the supply columns at Balaklava and the charging Russian cavalry was "a thin red streak tipped with steel", or so wrote William Russell. Later to be known as the Thin Red Line.

Sir Colin to the Argyll's,..."there's no retreat from here lad's, you'll have to die where you stand!"

.....rummages through cabinet for bayonets to touch;)..........

Just seen a show on the History channel called War Story about the PPCLI in Korea. They were being overun and the 303 with spike bayo was well used as required. When they bayoed the enemy they had to call down arty on their position. Amazing they held the position. Apparently the commies winter clothing would get hung up on the front sight and the boys would have to fire their weapon to dislodge them. That's intense!

I personally like bayonets because they match the rifles I tend to be drawn to. My Swiss K31 is a formidable rifle on its own but with a bayonet affixed it makes a heck of an instrument. Also that particular bayonet makes a satisfying ring when drawn from its sheath. Also, I've found the bayonet on an SKS is particularly useful for dispatching balloons that have escaped gunfire. I can't add much to the military application of them but personally if I had to choose a way to go I think I'd rather be shot then meet my demise on the end of a bayonet.
