Well he is a great buck as I thought. During my first stalk he busted me then the game was on, off he went herding his does in the opposite direction.
SOB I was mad at myself! I was into the wind, snow was soft and quiet, my head up looking for tine tips in the rolling hills. I paced myself accordingly on foot in hot pursuit and knew that I would see him again, but how far? There he is! Three hills over and across a shallow valley. He must be 500 yards away. I practiced so much with the Ruger #1 and had the confidence that I can take him, but he must stop and turn. He came-up on a doe and gave her a little sniff. KAPOOOOOW!!!!! I held on his spine and touched off. I refocused with the scope and noticed him laboring as he ran off. Thirty yards later he collapsed over on his left side. From behind me I heard this whooping from my son who witnessed the whole ordeal.

I walked towards the buck pacing how far he was and at the same time rechambering another round in the Ruger #1. When I was half way to the location I stopped and glassed the horizon I saw the right side of his rack sticking up in the field. Once I found the two foot wide blood trail that went 30 yards, I concluded my pace at 489..........safe to say a 450 yard shot, my longest ever. The top of his heart was totally gone and he died humanly.
Needles to say, he is going on the wall. A wonderful hunt with my best buddy and friend, and that's my son Tyler!.

Good job! I've never pressed my No.1 to even half that distance... But I'm shooting 7X57 and I believe that you are shooting .300 H&H... Great shot at any rate.

Sorry I forgot to mention the cartridge, etc. Yes the Ruger #1 is chambered for the 300 H&H and was loaded with 72.1 grains of IMR 4350 behind a 150 Nosler Accubond.

^ Although the results you had cannot be disputed, wouldn't a 180-200gr boatail be a better option? Those 150gr .308 cal bullets do not retain the trajectory as good as a heavier pill.

I use the 200gr Accubond in my .300H&H.

Good looking buck for sure...congrats! Always interesting when you put a face to an internet name...good shooting.

For the most part (95%) I only hunt deer and my average kill shots are between 125 to 150 yards. Therefore the 150 grain is adequate for my needs within the scope of my hunting method/style. I do practice a lot of shooting in the off season in the prone position at long distances (300 meters) and have confidence that the Nosler bullet will performas they should and shot placement is key. A premium bullet in the boiler at short or long distance will do the job.

Excellent job! Very nice buck.

Your story is eerily similar to the 7X8 mule deer I got last year near Drumheller...Have to wait couple more years.

Thanx for sharing....

Very nice track, I'm jealous I do not have a mule deer in my trophy room. Shot a couple forkhorns as a kid but haven't had a chance to hunt them seriously. Beautiful deer, congrats.

That is a fantastic buck, and from your other threads you put in the scouting time and miles to line him up. Congratulations.

Great deer Track! Can't wait to see what you wrestle up when you head north for Whitetails!
Thanks! My son and I are leaving bright and early this Wednesday morning for the Slave Lake area to hunt our favorite animal, the whitetail buck! Can't wait to get up there and the weather forecast is suppose to be great with snow almost everyday.
