So I went and picked this up today. Decided even if it sits in the safe I should still have one (sold the old one)

I know this rifle will be dragged up to deer camp, thrown around and well... Treated like an sks.

The store didn't have many, most of the bore's had pitting if they had nice wood or a good blue.

This one, well the picture does it VERY well, there are parts with pitting, re-blued that looks like a bbq brush did it. Black paint was flaking off when cleaning...
The bore is shiny and bright, with very good rifling though. It had the best bore, so I snagged it up. (230 but it was 15% off, so no tax)
Has the nice star with arrow in it, good clean markings... 1950r

I dropped some 3in1, let it sit. Got it VERY clean and id say all rust and Cosmo off.

Should be a fun shooter, we will see soon enough. Only non-corrosive because I am lazy and don't wish to clean it much.

Looks a lot nicer then what I've been seeing locally from the newer import('s)

Is the stock sanded down or is it still shellac'd? The front part looks original while the butt looks dull so I can't tell.

cuz I cleaned the SHIZ outa it haha, a fairly generous amount of oil on it to bring it up to par.

The stock is shellac still.. I may sand it down and stain it myself. No idea, depends how bord I get.

Surplus ammo is no big deal in the summer, take it apart when you get home and spray it with the hose then air dry with compressor. Done!. In the Winter that whole process is a pain in the A**. Factory in the winter for me too.
Yes I could get a large water tub to dunk things in but then I'd have to have the air compressor inside or freeze my hands and well, its not worth that effort agreed. Nice looking rifle, Using mineral spirits in the summer will take off all the black paint sludge on the rifle and will strip the metal so you can easily reblue the blank spots and the rifle will look great. If you get bored of course.

Bah! It's a shooter. I have a couple of nice ones. You know what I do with em? Kick the crap outa them and shoot em. By the time I got them they'd already been shot so I never considered making one a safe queen. Sounds so silly to have an SKS safe queen but there's no doubt in my mind we'll look back on these days and say, "do you eremember when you could have bought an SKS for $200!! Even terrible refurbs are $400 now.... "yada yadaj

I`ve got one of those, not the best or prettiest, but you know what...it shoots very well and the bore is in great shape (like yours)

I did like yourself and tore it down ,cleaned it very well ,got rid of any rust spots and flakes and now it looks not too bad.Mine is laminate stock.

I`m happy with it ,and it only cost me $ 199

Nice job and enjoy.

PS- oh yah...I`m lazy too ,no corrosive for me either LOL

They aren't perfect now (unless you buy a "super grade"), but if they shoot, who cares. Enjoy it and keep it clean and it will out last your kids.

I bought one like that at CT when they had a "Spend $200, get a $50 gift card". It was worth it. Nice shooter you have, go out and SHOOT IT!

Nice rifle!

I have two 1954 Tulas. One painted and one blued. Decided to find out what was under the paint...

...used simple paint stripper. Was gonna give it a better finish anyway. Just FYI.

Like i said above, strip the paint with mineral spirits. The first mosin I cleaned cosmoline off of has tons of this black gunk that ended up in the rinse. It took me a bit to understand that it had touch up paint sprayed on it. Clean the gun down to the blued metal with the spirits and cold blue it with Birch and Caseys or the Red boxed stuff from canadian tire. It is easy, when metal is bare sponge it on and rinse off then buff with fine steel wool and repeat until it looks ###y.
