With no LEH this year but still an itch to hunt something big, I'm torn between trying for 7B with its big moose, 3-point or cow elk (in places) seasons and whitetail opportunities or the Koots with 6-point elk and whitetail deer chances.

I have no experience hunting or calling Rocky Mountain elk but you gotta start some time right?

I have heard from numerous sources that 7B is pretty chewed up with oil and gas exploration and there is also concern in Region 4 about elk populaitions, so there are those considerations to weigh as well.

I have good advice on general places to go in both areas.

There is the distance issue from Vancouver too.

What would you do?

7B every time.

Especially with the oilfield slowdown, there'll be much less pressure and easier access.

There's no comparison go to the 7B and get way off the beaten path. It's amongst the best hunting in the world let alone BC.

That's really good advice, and I'd love to take it but I'm really clueless as to where to go and in addition I have a 4x4 pickup and no quad or boat.

Plus I thought with oil and gas exploration going on it was harder and harder to get "back of beyond."

I've been thinking about this a lot, but with one pickup and no trailer and being possibly three days drive from home if I go to upper 7B, I'd hate to travel 3,000 km and have a moose go bad.

Easily done, just a matter of ice blocks from the gas station. Meat keeps a lot better than folks seem to think, it'll be plenty cool up here by the time you're chasing moose, too.

Especially 7-50 thru 7-54 are amongst the best hunting on earth, the "Serengeti of the North" as dubbed by National Geographic. I need to stop trying to talk people into taking the trip! So easy to make the drive for what the experience is worth.

Thank you. I've done that for shorter trips, but the thought of a two or three-day trip with meat was daunting.

I don't know the area as well as Ardent; but 7-31, 7-22 and 7-21 have good access to the backcountry because of the network of FSR's from oil and gas, not in spite of it. Game populations also seem to be healthy.

There is indeed a misconception oil & gas has beaten down the flat land portions of 7B, the animals haven't seemed to notice except caribou and in fact the most common place to see moose is on remote oil and gas leases in that part of the region. They love the browse available on the cleared sites. There was a 50" bull only 1/2km away not thirty mins ago, not kidding. The further you go from towns, the better. Or hike into the Muskwa-Ketchika and experience paradise, I wince at the thought of foot packing out a moose- been there, done that. I'm young enough but too old for that now. As such I'd look at getting close to a major lake and huffing a canoe in to paddle the edges and call, you WILL find moose in 7B, you may not find the bull you're after every time but hard to avoid them in general.
