In central BC hunting, 100 to 300 yards, Mule Deer, rolling hills, some brush cover. Grizz and Moose country, about a week.

So which one of my Rifles?

Full wood Swede Mauser, 6.5x55, iron sights.

Full wood M44 Mosin, 7.52x54R, iron sights...Has a handy fold out Bear defense Bayonet.

Bubba Number4, 303, Scope, no iron sights.

Bubba P14, 303, iron sights.

94 30/30 Winchester, iron sights. :p

BTW I'm proficient with iron sights on the rifles above, and I can generally cover a original sized post it note at 100 yards.

Also I reload all but the Mosin, but have allot of Mosin hunting ammo on the way, so ammo is not a problem, and I tend to pack more then I need.

Any ideas/suggestions? {ducks behind couch..peeks out} :)
Oh and yes I have Binos.

i would go with the scoped 303, just cause i like scopes and it might give you a better chance in low light conditions. Thoose mulies can blend into the back ground.
but the 6.5x55 will drop em.

Rob,

I got more detail about the area. A scope is a must, as is a 30 cal rifle for the distance.

PM me and Ill give you a bit more details of the area, what I got from a guy anyway.

yikes. tough list to choose from. I wouldn;t take any if I was going to invest the time and substancial fuel costs going all the way to central mainland to hunt deer.

but whatever groups the tightest.

Bull####

a 6.5x55 with a 130-140 grain bullet @ 2600-2700 fps is as good or better than a 30 cal 150 grain the same speed. The long 6.5 bullet retains its velocity better and is a perfect match for deer sized game. With proper placement it will take moose as well.

My Swede is a very accurate rifle.
My bubba#4 not so much, but it does have the scope.

Hmmm, at least so far that narrows down what I drag to the range for some testing.

I sugest the 30-30 Win 94 because:
It's a classic and seems to match Mule deer nostalgia to perfection;
If you say shots are 100 to 300 yards, it's because you're hunting in such a way that you don't get closer than 100 yards from game. Slow down, pay attention, & stalk. The 30-30 will encourage you to have a more enjoyable hunt than you'd have with "longer range" calibers. The 30-30 will efficiently kill any deer that you stalk within 200 yds. Trust me on this. Been there, done that. Of course, if you're only measure of success is a kill, use the most technically advanced gun you own. Probably the Swede, and with a scope added.

Calum; The 6.5 is THE choice in this instance. While the 303 is plenty of rifle, (I have a very accurate scoped P14 ) I would favor the 6.5 for it's flat shooting capabilities and more than adequate punch for even a large muley. If it will shoot it, I would suggest you try a good bullet in the 125/130 grain area. (Partition, Accubond, TSX) Regards, Eagleye.

None of the above. :p

Take the scope off the .303 and put it on the Swede............;)

If you are used to seeing and shooting game at that kind of distance, I reckon your iron-sighted Swede is a good choice. But my VERY LIMITED experience out there two years ago convinced this flat-land Ontario boy that one very much needs a scope. Those shots can be long ones..........

And binos are fine, but if you do not have much time to evaluate a rack for shoot/no shoot, a scope is a lot better. NOTE I am not suggesting you use a rifle scope for SPOTTING, but when you see a respectable buck trotting towards the trees and you "THINK" it is a shooter, your best bet is to lay crosshairs on him to make that decision before he disappears.

I missed a deer last year during our muzzle loader season because I put the binos on it first.................and by the time I got my gun up, that deer was long gone...........voice of experience.....:(

Yah I mentioned out to 300 yards as that is pretty much my self imposed limit I have set for use with Iron sights, and I will be hunting with others, so I don't know how good they are at getting close to critters yet. :D

I personally have a tendency to walk-up, and almost trip over on critters...usually Bears.

I'm looking into milsurp solutions to scoping the swede with a modern scope in the milsurp section. This combo intrigues me. :)

Maybe I should just have all my rifles in a golf bag and hire a caddy in camo? :p
