I can't for the life of me find the section that states it's unlawful to have more than 5 rounds in your semi-auto magazine while hunting in BC. Has this changed? I've been checked for exactly this (and tags) prior to 2018 by CO's.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/sports-recreation-arts-and-culture/outdoor-recreation/fishing-and-hunting/hunting/regulations/2018-2020/hunting-trapping-synopsis-2018-2020.pdf

I want to take my 10/22 with 10 round mag out tomorrow, but I'm worried that might be unlawful. Can a smart slowly person explain this to me?

The only time the bc synopsis talks about mag limits is for shotguns and hunting with shot, I’ve read it cover to cover a few times and I can’t recall anywhere that it talks about semi auto rifles and mag limits. Let alone a semi auto rimfire, pg17 at the top left section titled Legal Hunting Methods. It’s the section titled Firearms.

BC doesn't have such a regulation for hunting. Not sure why you'd be checked for that

As said above. Only shotgun limit restrictions in BC

he probably got checked because some CO's think they are cops and thought they would check firearms act compliance. So on top of thinking they are cops, they also have an undereducated grasp on the magazine laws and no doubt have it in their mind that all semi autos are limited to 5 rounds. We all know that this is not true, but average officer probably does not.

to add to this conversation a little.
The hunting synopsis is just a guideline for the actual Wildlife act and the act is what is "law" in BC , regardless of what a CO or other LEO might try and concoct during an inspection.

Here is a cut and paste from the BC Wildlife Act as it pertains to use of firearms.

_________________________________________________________________________
Hunting, trapping and firearm prohibitions
26 (1)
A person commits an offence if the person hunts, takes, traps, wounds or kills wildlife
(a)
that is an endangered species or threatened species,
(b)
in a wildlife sanctuary,
(c)
at a time not within the open season,
(d)
with a firearm or a bow during the prohibited hours,
(e)
by the use or with the aid of a light or illuminating device,
(f)
with poison,
(g)
with a set gun, or
(h)
with a pump, repeating or auto loading shotgun unless the magazine contains a plug that is incapable of removal except by disassembling the gun, and that makes the magazine incapable of holding more than 2 cartridges.
(2)
Subsection (1) (c), (d), (e) and (h) does not apply to a person who hunts or traps wildlife that is on the person's property and is a menace to a domestic animal or bird.

There are no magazine restrictions for long guns in BC except for those mentioned for shotguns and of course, the rest is a default to the actual Canadian Firearms Act.
Checking the magazine capacity of anything other than a shotgun is not in BC Conservation officer's play book and if I was asked about my 10 round xcrm mags in my stag-10 while out hunting I would ask the CO if he was a Chief firearms officer or a CO LOL

Yeah thanks for clearing that up. I think the CO got confused and figured the firearms act restricted everything to 5 rounds in a semi. I need that quick 8th or 9th shot, you know how grouse can be when they're standing still

This CO i'm talking about was one who checked me a few years back. The new one has checked me twice this season, and only checks if your gun is loaded in the truck and for tags. I just didn't want a knee in the back of my neck over some grouse, mind you I got in a fight with an off duty cop once on a back road while trying to impress a girl. She never talked to me again :(

BC magazine break down:

Hunting with shotguns:

3 shot limit for hunting with shot
Federal magazine limits for hunting with slugs

Shotguns for non hunting purposes:
Federal magazine limits.

Hunting with rifles (centerfire or rimfire) :
Federal magazine limits
