BC Vancouver Island/Lower Mainland Gunsmiths?

Hello.

I'm a new rifle owner (me being new, the rifle being old...) and also living on the island, compiling a list of possible gunsmiths to look at my very very old Ross. From my searches here, a have about a half-dozen possibilities, but the posts that I got these names from are several months to years old, and I don't know if they are still active.

Guntech (Dennis Sorenson) - tried him, email rebounded as no recipient
Pullen's Gunsmithing - close and local, but old mention
Gone Fishin' - nearest is Duncan, but not too far away for me
Silhouette Shop (Vern Swarbrick) - Also Duncan
Murray Charlton - reportedly retired a few years ago
Bits of Pieces - Across the water on the mainland, also heard mixed reviews?

Any up-to-date information or recommendations anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

GUNTECH is retired , John Pullen is deceased ..not sure if the shop is being run , GONE FISHIN is not a smithing shop per se .. may have contacts for you , MD CHARLTON in Victoria might be helpful with references.
 
First and foremost, it'd be for them to check over my Ross to see if there were any concerns that the previous owner overlooked, and it is as serviceable as I hope it to be.

Then maybe down the line I might look at seeing if it is possible to make modifications from single shot to 5-round internal mag. Keeping it .22 LR of course.
 
I would try to find a Ross rifle collector/aficionado and I’m sure they will be more than happy to look it over. You can also ask around which smith as the most experience with Ross rifles cause that is more important than a smith close to you, you can always shop the rifle to them to look it over.

Very good points, yes. Definitely would be the priority over how close they are to me when it comes to any modifications.

Alot of the go to greats are older now retired or other ...

Most of my custom builds / needs have already been met

I just go to Corlanes now - all the work they do there - they do well, quick or reasonable turn around. Its not hard to ship maybe 60-70 bucks maybe more - all really depends on what you need or want done ...

Google what you need done, then Google the company etc. read-around on who provides what, prices, reviews, ask around some more.

But other than Cerakote, the art of the lathe is becoming harder and harder to find Millrights and with the rifle build from scratch skill sets. They are still out there - but we are losing the artists'

Yeah, that's what I've been seeing too from looking. Lots of disappearing artisan skills. And an economical setting which makes it really hard to try to fill that niche, or even just look to keep those kinds of old trade skills alive. I'd love to hone my leatherworking or wood/antler carving, but I simply lack the money and live in a tiny apartment.

Okay! Sounds like I'll be bringing my Ross with me when I next visit my family up near Nanaimo, and see if I can arrange a detour to Advent then!
