Sorry if this topic has been beat to hell and back but I’m new to the 102 game and .308
Just bought one and need cheap ammo for it

I was wondering how the Hirtenberger or Barnaul steel stuff runs?
Or any cheap .308 or 7.62x51 because I’m a cheap mofo

Any help is much appreciated!

See if your local store can get some federal lake city 500 rounds bulk ammo for .308. I see some shops carrying them for about $380+tax. The brass is also good for reloading too.

If you've shot both, how does it compare to Hirtenberger?

Hirtenberger causes FTE every second round in my rifle. 180grai s no issues. Dealing with warranty though.

I haven't tried Hirtenberger. But you can't go wrong with Federal and the Lake City brass is military grade, also re-loadable. Compare to those 20 rounds box, not for match purpose, this 500 round bulk box is really worth the money if you can get under $400, that's less than $0.8/round.

Found a post about Hirtenberger from the forum:

Hirtenberger.works well in my rifle out to 600 meters.

+1 on the Hirtenbertger being good ammo.
Our Provincial Rifle Association was selling it last summer for use in the F-Class Sporter category and the folks who used it were quite happy. I've also seen it fired through custom F-Class rifles and it worked very well, averaging just below 1 MOA.

This year, we got a great deal on Federal Gold Medal Match (185 Berger Juggernaut bullets) for $35.00 per box and it is truly 1/2 MOA ammo, as tested with a PGW Coyote/ Tangent Theta rig.

I just ordered a BCL102 from SFRC on Friday, since I got caught up in the gun ban phenomenon of everyone running out a buying up what they can. Plus, it's an excuse to buy a new gun. I'm guessing it will be a Gen III, but who knows. I just hope it doesn't have the issues that I'm reading so much about.
Funny though that everyone was poo-pooing the BCL, and now it seems that Stag has just as many issues. I don't know, but it appears that the BCL likes to run with a good amount of lube slathered in it and it likes heavier bullets with an adequate amount of push behind them. It would also be fair to assume it likes to be cleaned regularly, which for anyone with military experience, is to be expected.
Then again, maybe I'm just an optimist standing out in left field. I dunno.

I don’t have a BCL but that Hirtenberger works great in my M1A.
It must be a fairly hot round too because it’s point of impact is quite a bit higher than the PPU white box 762x51 that I also shoot.
I have heard a reason that Hirtenberger could be hotter is that it’s possibly de-linked machine gun ammo, no idea if that’s true but it’s defini hotter than the ppu white box so if you’re looking for a hot round then give it a try. I’d venture to say any issues you may have with it would be coming from the gun not the ammo, I’ve put 200 rounds of hirt through my M1a without a single issue.
I also ordered some federal lake city from gotenda , I got two boxes of 500 , I’ve read that it is supposedly very consistent ammo.
Only thing I’d say to avoid if possible is any of the PRC 762NATO copper washed ammo , I have 1040 rounds of it but I believe it is corrosive , I’ll be keeping it as my reserve stash , it was cheap though $700 for 1040 rounds.

I run hirtenberger and norinco copper washed through mine, no issues. Be aware if you shoot the norc stuff it is a bit weaker so you could potentially run into cycling issues.

What the hell gives you that idea? I think I’ve read posts from a total of 5 people experiencing issues with the Stag 10. All were minor issues relating to over torqued or under torqued screws (handguard and has block). The issues were immediately dealt with.

The BCL has chronic and ongoing issues. There has to be a hundred different people complaining of various serious problems. Just this morning I was reading a thread on another site about people’s rifles being gone for months at a time and that the new guy they hired to do warranty work being MIA...

And right on time the BCL bashers show up. Lol, sad. Is this a career for you.
