Ya, ya, another review thread blah blah, stag 10, blah blah BCL problems blah blah d:h:.

Ok now that that's out there, on to the very basic review, I will follow up with a range report once I get the goodies ordered and on there as well as get to cleaning it properly.

Ok, so, after the long wait (ordering it March 28th and receiving it yesterday) I have finally received my 102.

I grade this firearm on the below, which doesn't speak to its performance simply my impression of the firearm.

  • Fit
  • Finish
  • Quality
  • Function - will report this later on the range day.

Fit: I broke this thing down last night to check out how it feels compared to my AR. I was happy to see the take down pins were not to tight or to loose, the front pin was much more snug than the back one but this, in my experience, seems to be typical of AR like firearms. Everything was clean and there was no play between the upper and lower or any gap with the dust cover (not sure why people were losing it over this anyway). The only thing I noticed, and maybe this is the norm with the new style BCL stocks, is that there seems to be some noise when you tip the firearm forward and back, like there is something loose inside the buffer tube. I'm not particularly worried about it although it is slightly annoying for my OCD I do plan to replace the stock ASAP and I will check out the tube when I do that.

Finish: After reading, for years, about the finish on the NEA and BCL firearms I had really low expectations. I expected to see machine marks and a "piss poor cerakote job". So upon wiping off the oil on this thing, I looked for any imperfections. I was able to find the ever so smallest what appears to me to be a machine mark on the front of the magwell. Other than that, I was really happy with it. The cerakote seems to be in great shape as it should be for a new firearm and I don't see any imperfections on the hand guard, barrel or anywhere else.

Quality: Again like the above I had low expectations from all the reviews over the years on here. I was happy with how the rifle cycled rounds through, the new trigger is really nice and crisp and the mag it came with dropped freely. The upgraded match barrel (which SFRC upgraded me for free) is VERY nice and although I was not to hot about a stainless barrel at the time I am stoked I got it and will just get it cerakoted down the road if I start to want it black. I do feel like for the price I paid (IOP sale $1705 to my door) I am very happy with the quality of the firearm and I feel it will hold up for what ill use it for, which will be mostly local hunting.

That being said, I have two issues though. Firstly the stock, this is the worst stock I have ever handled. It seems like its made of recycled 4L milk jugs. It feels cheap and fragile, I would honesly feel like if I took this hunting and dropped it the thing would shatter into 100 pieces like some car bumper that's been rear ended. The design is ok, I could live with it if I felt the quality was better but it will be the absolute first thing to go and for $75 its not the end of the world to get the stock I want on there.

Secondly, and this is not really a BCL thing (I don't think) the IMI mag that came with the firearm only loads 4 rounds, I feel like im going to break the thing if I try to jam the 5th in there, it has some movement but I cant get it loaded. Has anyone else experienced this? I have loaded thousands over the years, its not user error. I am wondering if its worth it to contact SFRC? Also on that note, which mags do you guys find you would buy 20 of?

Lastly, this is more for SFRC. They were really good to deal with, Ryan, Craig and the staff there are really good for how many people they have contacting them and the stress they have. I was getting pretty impatient toward the end of the wait but then I got a call asking if I wanted a free barrel upgrade and the gun was shipped out that day, I don't feel they piss around with these things. They get them in and ship them right out, that's pretty great service in my eyes so thanks guys, ill defiantly continue to buy from you.

The true test will be shooting this thing, I am meticulous with the care of my firearms because I usually expect a lot from them, so this will be run hard. Wish me luck.

Cheers.

My gen 1 ran 100%. Lots of the bashing is done by people who have never even seen one in real life who like to jump on the NEA sucks bandwagon.

That being said, a handful of folks have had issues. If I were to buy one again I would be after a gen 1 because they look so much better and were forged not milled.

well i own mine, i shoot mine, and its a pos

Good to hear another happy customer out there. NEA/BCL is capable of making a nice product, they're just not consistent about it. Most are good but a few too many (in my opinion) have issues.
They used to at least have a fantastic almost no questions asked warranty and were good about sending out new parts or replacing entire rifles but it sounds like that has changed and they're not as responsive to customers any more.
Looking forward to the range report.

I got a Gen 2 BCL 102 on a trade (for my M10X). I was weary of it, and preferred to have gotten a Stag 10 (obviously), but at the time I had no idea when the 308's were going to land, and IRG was indicating the possibility of a great deal coming (which didn't happen for complete 308 rifles).

I'm glad I took the gamble. It shoots great, I used 1983 Hirtenberger with great results. Fit and finish are great. She's a keeper for now, will see how long it holds up. My only issue is the dust cover, it's loose and opens on its own with the slightest breeze.

There’s a set screw under the detent. I had to peen the treads on mine to keep it from coming out. Screws too short for Loctite to set up, so I took a punch to the threads. Not like you should ever have to remove it.

Mine shot around 1 moa groups when I got it with Federal 168 BTHP. The only issue is that out of the box it was more of a bolt action than a semi auto ar-10. It's been back at BCL for over a month now and the last I heard from their warranty guy was when they received it 4 weeks ago. They haven't responded to my emails since then. I guess I'll get it back sometime during the winter at this point in time.

Drop me a pm with your name and a claim number if they gave you one and I can check on it. I know we just sent them back a bunch of warranty parts they had cerakoted.

Good luck! I honestly hope it runs good for you, my gen 1 is a jam-o-matic, but others have run flawlessly or so I hear.

My Gen 2 had some issues.

I sent it back; BCL and SFRC were great. Although it did take a while, I got it back, re-built.

It now shoots reliably and sub-MOA at 100 yds. with Federal Gold Medal Sierra MatchKing 175 Gr.

I'm keeping it, and looking for another upper or receiver set.

Got my Blonde (Brunt Bronze) 102 in June, still shooting, no issues. Keeping the BCG wet and happy, just like my... well never mind! :)
I also just received a new little sister for the 102, Casey Brouwer and the boys and girls at Tactical Ordnance Inc. do excellent work.
Another great Canadain Company and I happy with the shotgun and how well it shoots.

I'm jealous yours came with the Stainless barrel.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to cerekote that barrel. I think the contrast of the silver barrel with the black flash hider/rifle looks pretty sharp.

 Scope just arrived, range this weekend.

Details? Better photos :p . Also what ammo are you planning on shooting?

I noticed, and maybe this is the norm with the new style BCL stocks, is that there seems to be some noise when you tip the firearm forward and back, like there is something loose inside the buffer tube

It's not the stock. Which I agree is a POS. But that was expected. I planned on going with a SOPMOD anyways.

That noise is the buffer. This is common and if you take your other AR rifles and tip them forward/back you will hear the same thing. Unless you use a JP silent buffer, Spike Tactical buffer etc. That being said... it is far more pronounced on the BCL 102 than my other AR308 rifles. When my Stag 10 parts get here, I will take a look at the buffer and see if it's a suitable replacement for the BCL 102 buffer in terms of noise/weight etc. Or I will look at a Spike's tactical which uses tungsten powder.

Going to crash the party on this review a bit as I don't feel like doing up one myself when we already have a decent one started here.

A couple of things I will add that I happened to really like with my BCL 102:

1) The contours. They match up perfectly for the upper/lower and I happen to really like the asthetics of the gen2+ design. That's subjective. However the change seems more than just for looks. It appears to be done to aid in keeping a consistent match up with the upper/lower contours and fit in general. Plus it loses some weight in selective areas. Again, subjective but I like it.

2) The mag release. A really small thing but I like the choice. Mine has the heavy textured black mag release with the silver from the screw seen in the middle. I don't know, I just like it. Tactile is good and although the bit of sliver isn't tactical (you can cover it if you want), I like the look.

3) The ambi bolt release. The typical design by pretty everyone except high end (KAC, LMT, H&K etc) is the standard bar release. I like how BCL did theirs, it's not a simple bar. It's simple but it looks good and works well. I will however criticize BCL for not including a protective fence around the left side to include an ambi mag release. An exposed Norgon looks like an after thought. A fair number of manufacturers are guilty of this. KAC/LMT, H&K and a few others should be looked at for how to do this right!

4) The ambi charging handle. The always wings design does deserve some laughing at! While not as nice or durable looking as a Raptor, it so far seems to work well. It gives you an extended charging handle which you need if using decent sized optics and also gives ambi ability. I'm leaving it on mine. If it breaks then I'll look at replacing it. But, it's better than expected. Which pretty much sums up my overall thoughts on this firearm.

5) A lot of people don't like the handguard, or more likely don't like that it's hard to get a light handguard that matches the new contours. Well, I'm not going for a super light weight BCL 102. So I like the stock handguard just fine. MLok, QR sling point. Seems sturdy so it will protect the rifle and wont' flex. I'm sicking with it as it matches up nicely with the upper/lower in terms of function and looks.

The trigger. The new ones have an "improved" trigger. I have the pre improved version. It sucks. I did the paracord trick and I believe I will be able to shoot decently with it now. But... I use the initial crunch like a first stage, then it's smooth and you hit the wall. Used like a 2 stage you then get a crisp although not super light release. Again I believe I will be able to shoot decently with it. Out of the box it was really bad. I figured I would just be replacing it. It might still come to that.

One other side note. The colours. The FDE isn't FDE. Matching for the stock is a pain. If going black then it's good, but I wanted to keep the general shape of the rifle in brown. Their FDE is really a brown, taupe, tan or coyote brown. The B5 SOPMOD in FDE I ordered, was far too light. I bought a Coyote brown one. It's a bit darker. This photo hides the shade difference. While not perfect it's close enough and I find it acceptable. The FDE one didn't work at all. I had a black B5 on before and it looked decent, but I like this better.

Also a buddy has one in "black". It's not black. More a grey/black/bluish. The main reason no one is complaining about these colours is that they happen to look really good. A pain to match stuff to, but they are nice looking.

Here's mine done up and ready to go:
