What are you guys loading up?

I got some gift cards to burn, and I don’t know what bullet I should choose.

168 SMK or the Hornady 168 FMJBT.

I was planning on using Varget as I have 2lb right now.

How far are you shooting? Are you looking for accuracy or loading for competition? Planning on hunting with it?

Hornady 168 gr HPBT Match under 43 gr of RL15
AMAX 155 gr under 44.5 gr of RL 15

Both will occasionally give barely sub MOA from a cold tube but mostly 1.5 to 2.5”

168 SMK, 2.8 OAL, 44 varget. My pet load is 43.4 varget but.. these have 18.5" 1:10 twist barrels so I'll be upping the varget to 44.

Also 175 smk based on the above, although I think you would have to push it closer to 45 varget if that's safe to do in your rifle. Again, short barrel and hitting that accuracy node. At 43.4 these are my go to loads for Remington 5R milspecs and AR10 rifles. It's based off the M118LR round that the US military has sunk huge amounts of money researching. Incidentally they created that round with Federal and the civilian version that is a little lower in the velocity is the Federal Gold 168 and 175. Which is roughly 43 grains of varget. These rounds actually use 4064 but varget seems to work as well or better. Either way, those are the two main powders to choose with RL15 being a third although temp sensitive option.

One poster has shown a 5 round group using the same formula I have posted although I think he was using 168 Amax instead of smk. I have had similar results with amax or 168 smk and this formula. Some rifles prefer one over the other but they are usually fairly close. Here's his post and his results using 44 varget. Again it's a very well known formula.

Well that's shooting as fast as I can get back on target, not going for precision. That was put a smile on my face and have fun shooting.

If you want precision this is my best group, 5 rounds at 100 meters. https://imgur.com/yoRyjEc
I even have a witness for that one.
