BCL102 Range Review, SECOND RANGE TRIP POST 123!!!

Send me an email at info@mysticprecision.com with some pics and we can discuss. Some brakes work great... some just make alot of noise :)

Someone please start a separate post so we can gauge interest before we start. I need to know who wants to share their rifle for tests and timeframe. We should have an assortment of NEA, ATRS, AR10, whatever. 1 sample from each brand/family. I will discuss directly with the owners so they are comfy with how I will test. There are some platforms that will not shoot accurately but can participate for S&G's.

We need to see how many CGN members are willing to help defray the costs. A show of hands will be enough to start. If we can get industry participation, even better. I have indicated what Mystic Precision/Jerry will offer to this project... any other business that wants to play along can email me directly to discuss.

This is NOT a pissing match about who got the bigger D!CK and I will shut this down if the direction heads that way.

The goal is to see what a platform can do wrt to pure accuracy. I will make every effort to get each and every rifle shooting at their best. I would be thrilled if we could get a bunch of NR AR'ish rifles shooting sub MOA with commonly available parts and techniques. Then we can have a bunch of happy lawabidding users enjoying them OFF THE RANGE.

That would be a great project indeed.

Jerry

This is awesome !!
I'm in for some funding

Please refer to Mystic's business forum for any further discussion of the testing project.
Please discuss other rifles in other threads. This one was started to discuss the shooting characteristics of the BCL102. The thread has been badly derailed.
Yesterday Jay and I had the opportunity to shoot his rifle at my favourite range.

This was the first time that I had an opportunity to inspect and shoot one of these rifles.
Jay will no doubt post an update in this thread, so I will limit my comments to my impressions of the rifle.
I found that the rifle balances nicely with weight between the hands. The weight with a Bushnell 6500 1 1/2-8 installed is quite reasonable.
The rifle is reliable. It has the superior ergonomics of the AR system.
I liked it.
I don't think it will displace the AR for service rifle competition; the modest recoil of the .223 is a great advantage. Just about all the range rifles I shoot have brakes, and I do not find them objectionable. The one on this rifle works. There is recoil, but it is nicely attenuated.
The rifle was 100% reliable with the different cartridges we shot.
I had brought some Target Rifle handloads that I had put together some years ago when I still shot TR. Prepped Winchester cases full length sized, Federal Match primers, 46 grains Varget, weighed, and 155gr Sierra Match Kings. I brought along a bolt action PR with a new jccustombarrels.com light Palma contour 1-12 barrel. Shot a fouler, then a 5 shot group. .710 moa. This is on-hand ammunition, developed for another rifle. 6 1/2-20 Leupold. This was the 10th group fired from this rifle, average is solidly sub-minute. The rounds just fit the 102's magazines.
My 5 round group from the 102 was 2.13moa, a nice round group, no stringing. Accuracy equal to a purpose built PR with a higher powered scope? No. Usable accuracy? Sure. Work up loads for the rifle? Wouldn't hurt. Put a higher powered scope on for testing purposes? Sure. With the compact 6500 in place, the rifle is ready to go hunting.
There has been discussion of the weight and balance of the rifle. I found it satisfactory as is. If I wanted lighter, I would turn the flutes off the forward portion of the barrel, and take a few inches off the handguard. It doesn't need to extend out beyond the gas block.

I hit the range again, this time with tiriaq & the BCL102 did not disappoint! I AM REALLY LIKING THIS RIFLE!!! :ar15:

Cheers
Jay

Here is my last BCL102 target, I figure I am good to go for deer!!!

It's a 2" square, and I'm aiming at the bottom right corner for contrast on the crosshair. The 3 together a little higher was a group after adjusting scope.

Various ammo, 2 shooters & one group from a bolt gun...

Groups like this make it hard for me to wait on the IOP pricing :). Cant wait to get mine this fall.

Looks like I might have to join you all and shoot my 155 gr Scenars through before I jump in and say (you guessed it....) "Don't buy ONE, buy TWO of them...." We shall see how this turns out. You guys are really encouraging me....

Cheers,

I had some precision rounds loaded in Lapua brass, 47gr Varget, 154 Scenars with me. 46gr/155SMK is a standard load, didn't want to try the 47/154Scenar load in someone else's rifle. Probably would not have fit the magazines, bit longer than the 155gr cartridges.
Second photo, top two targets - left is from the 102, right is the cleaned barrel fouler then 5 shot group from the PR with the same ammunition.
The holes in the group shot with '77 IVI look lonely, they are so far away from each other. Shamed to admit it, but I have never found any 7.62x51 ball that shoots bigger groups than IVI. Incidentally, above and left from the IVI group is Hirtenberg - note the different point of impact at 100m. Note the IVI is 40 years old, the HB only 37...

Gotta say it again - the 102 is a really nice rifle to shoot. Handles well, no issues.

Me running the 102... Guys who like the AR15 platform, will really like the 102 in 308 for big game hunting!

Cheers
Jay
