BCL102 Range Review, SECOND RANGE TRIP POST 123!!!

I have seen the "In Range TV" tests. I would never claim that they were conclusive. I have used a C8 in slushy snow in about -5 degree environment and had a bugger of a time keeping it running, but I have also used it for a week in +30 heat on a sandy range where it was continually dirty and smokin' hot and it ran like a champ (except for the worn out magazines). I have also used an FNC1 countless times in very unforgiving environments and had it run splendidly. Am I saying one is better than the other? Nope - I am saying that there are a lot of variables and that I have more experience with piston driven guns and thus feel more comfortable with them. I still would not hesitate to use a DI gun, but if I am forking out the money, I would tend to lean to something else. I may still get one of these Bcl102's after time has had its opportunity to wear on them.

Fair enough. I do tend to lean towards the piston stuff myself for reliability in cold conditions. Usually for cold conditions DI guns need just the right type of lube, and even then they aren't always the best. As long as you know the firearm you are using you will be good.

As far as finding out more about the BCL-102s I hope to do an in depth review and do updates as time passes. I can tell you right now I won't be putting thousands of rounds through it right off the bat, or torture testing it, but who does that kind of stuff anyways :p

Oddly enough, I'm one that is not so worried about the weight.

Since my days of packing a FN around, I've been waiting a long time for something like this.

Almost went for XCR-M until this became a reality. The FN, surely we all know, I have no hope of ever having one, since I don't have the 12(x) to support it. This will be the closest thing I can think of. It will fill the void.

If your worried about the weight get the barrel fluted or turned down, hardly a big deal.

Outer portion of the .800" diameter barrel is already fluted. Turning down a nitride barrel apparently is possible; turning down the fluted portion might be interesting, given the chatter that could result as the flutes pass the tool.
No idea what the diameter of the breech end of the barrel under the handguards is. Maybe this could be reduced as well.
An AR type barrel is easier to turn down than most; two portions to do, breech to gas block, gas block to muzzle. Short sections to turn.

Did some quick math and it looks like turning down barrel from 0.800" to 0.700" will save about 0.6lbs. In reality it'll be less since it's already fluted and the gas block area won't be turned down.

I suspect they could shave off 1lb or close to it with a clamshell and a light profile barrel. That would be the gun I would reaaaalllly want. Then my fella from the pre-order could have a brother :)

Speaking of weight.... I'm a C1A1 guy for decades... Then C68 happened. Now I just hunt with a Winnie Model 70 Featherweight... Don't get old.... Hey  where did them 40 years go?

Cheers,
Barney

Without touching the barrel you could start by swapping their heavy 14" with a lightweight handguard ( drop 8 or 9 oz's if you choose one of the ultra-lightweight SLR's or Odin Works), remove the brake or go Ti compensator (drop another 2-3 oz), swap to Ti gas block ( another 1 oz).

I like the medium weight barrel and it's already fluted and nitrided. BCL will eventually offer light profile barrels if you really want one I'm sure.

Never turned a nitride barrel but i have turned a fluted barrel once before.

Lube, light cuts, power feed, and patience. You get chips not swarf so it is messy but not too bad and can be done.

Personally for mine I am going to use it as is (humped a C9 and C6 for many years when I was younger) and if the weight gets to my old knees I will just go for a lightweight handguard / tube.

I'm waiting to find out about the barrel extension. Proprietary? If it is, can one be purchased?
With a barrel extension in hand, a replacement barrel could be made. Faster than waiting for factory options.

Any chance to get pics of the barrel out of the receiver?

Does it use standard AR10 type barrels?

Jerry

This is probably the biggest question not answered yet about this rifle.

Trigger:Yes
Handgaurd:yes
Buffer tube/stock:yes
Barrel extension???

Would be great if we could just buy a premium 6.5CM barrel(or whatever you want) off the shelf and install at home(with proper tools).

I'm not disagreeing with you lol. Not sure what you're getting all fired up over dude. You know what they say, opinions are like @ssholes haha. I only say that some people "couldn't afford one" because people literally said that they couldn't afford a MH. The NEA will be great to bridge the gap.

Hmmm, well I can afford one. I'm well into ARs and I've supported the shop in the past.
I'm not convinced it ever boiled down to 'can't afford' - I just couldn't be bothered.
i suspect there are plenty of people out there in a similar boat.

Someone new to the game or looking for a new .308 AR or semi auto? Can't fathom they'd try anything else.

Well, someone named "Jay" did just shoot 100 rds through his and it might need to be stripped down for a good cleaning.....like maybe really scrub out the barrel extension and tenon....
