BCL102 Range Review, SECOND RANGE TRIP POST 123!!!

RELOAD, RELOAD, RELOAD

Then you can shoot the "right" ammo :)

Jerry

I think you are right, however most don't reload, and for reviewing purposes it is better to have factory because that is what people want to see shot.

I had to make the decision instead of buying lots of bullets, to buy less than 100rds of fancy ammo to try. It will be fun to shoot though.

Im the same 100-200 rounds somewhere in there I will clean.
I mainly shoot NP and lead im not so worried about, when I switched to barnes in my 280 I cleaned a bit more
that copper can be nasty. just my .02 im not expert just noticed with copper rounds you can see accuracy in my one rifle drop
with every box.

Just a heads up guys, I bought an A2 style flash hider to replace the muzzle brake. The muzzle brake came off with very little pressure applied to the wrench, way less than I've ever needed when removing other muzzle devices. You guys may want to check the torque and see if this is an issue common to these guns.

I also replaced the trigger with a RRA National Match unit - I will be putting the stock unit back in because the safety can be applied without the rifle being cocked. I suspect this is because of the shorter 'tail' on the RRA unit as opposed to the stock trigger.

my muzzle brake is really on there. No issues here, other than that I actually have to get it off at some point to install a new handguard lol

Anyone think it is worthwhile starting a thread for ammo that is not accurate or has malfunctions with the BCL to help those out who have yet to try it?

I have found a few that are very inaccurate and one that had a feeding issue.

Problem is most 308 ammo is geared for bolt rifles and thus are loaded with powders and charges that may not be ideal of the gas system needs. So you can have a perfectly accurate rifle shoot badly cause the ammo is not in tune with it. It will be more obvious once the accuracy testing is under way.

Given how inexpensively you can set up to reload ammo vs the cost of factory ammo, especially match stuff, it is good economics and so much more enjoyable if the load is letting the rifle shoot at its best.

For me, missing is very expensive.

This is true sir.

the ar10/ar15 are designed so that the safety cannot be put on unless the hammer is "back"....... if your able to put the safety on with the hammer uncocked then there is something wrong with the tolerances of the factory safety/trigger, i would not use this gun with factory trigger as it is obviously unsafe to do so.

Hello Jerry,

Keeping what you have said in mind, let us know where you think would be a good place to start with reloads for this rifle. I always try to develop a load that can do double duty, both for hunting and target.

Meanwhile, how do you expect the newer Hornady "Black" ammo will perform in this rifle?

Thanks.

Range day 2 tried federal fusion 150 - feed fine accuracy sucked. Then another magic round Hornady precision hunter 178 ELDX. I wish I could post pictures without using photobucket but don't know how - got 5 in one inch maybe under need to measure. And right after that group followed it up with 3 in 1 inch.

Next i I will start reloading but I may not have time prior to hunting so the hornady may be my moose round this year.

I have some of that Hornady Precision Hunter 178 for testing tomorrow. Now you have me excited!

Hit the range today with a bunch of ammo, much like Travis Bickle noted, most of the surplus shot not all that great. My setup/technique left a bit to be desired - I was shooting prone, supported on the mag and up front with a shooting bag. No bipod or rear bag to speak of. Fed Fusion 150gr shot ok, not great. The real performer for me today was Hornady 168gr BTHP Match - roughly 1.5" @ 100yd. I definitely want to try some more groups with a bipod, rear bag, and no coffee.

I did shoot with the RRA NM trigger today and the rifle malfunctioned every shot. The rifle would fire, extract, and chamber a new round every time but the trigger would not reset. I needed to pull the charging handle back a little ways each shot to #### the hammer - not really sure what the issue is because the trigger appeared to function fine cycling by hand after installation. I will be switching back to the stock unit tomorrow.Other points - I very much dislike the narrow profile and lack of rubber butt pad on the stock, I would prefer to run something akin to the RRA 'operator' stock or whatever they call it but that's just a personal preference/comfort thing for me. Lot's of sharp edges on the lower that need to be rounded off as well.
