I'm looking to get myself a new hunting rifle at the end of this month, something that will last me long enough to hand down to my daughter (currently 5 months old) when she's old enough to hunt, and powerful enough to kill anything in Canada.
My current choice is a Browning X-Bolt with a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36. Not sure about calibre. Looking at 30-06, .308 or 7mm-08. Must be bolt action, because that's what I like.

My price limit is about $1500-2000 of my money, not including whatever gift certificates I get (currently have $250, more coming I'm told). If there is enough extra, I'll spend it on a handgun , something not .22 or 9mm (I already have both). Bonus points for suggestions on a handgun that will also fit in the budget. I like semi-auto, but am open to a revolver if it is #####in' enough

I plan on buying from Shooter's Choice because it's nearby, and I have gift certificates for there.

Suggestions, modifications, or approvals on my selection are welcome.

You would be hard pressed to do better than a new Mod 70 Supergrade. For your price range I believe this rifle gives the most value for the dollar right now. I also really like my Rem Mod 700 CDLs and SS CDLs, or if you like smaller and lighter rifles I really like my Rem Mod 7 CDL if you want a short cartridge like a 260 or 7-08.

For something that could be handed down to your daughter I'd have to agree with the Model 70 Supergrade or a nice wood stocked Remington Model 7. For the X-bolt I would look at the Micro Midas. As for caliber, any of the short actions would be great, preferably a .308 or 7-08.
If you're looking to spend upwards of $2000 for the rifle alone I can't help ya as I don't know enough about the value of rifles in that price range, but I'm sure you'll get pointed in the right direction with some help from the gunnutz team.

I really want a rifle in s&w .500 but if don't have any justification for one... Nor can I say it is any more then a because it is cool, besides the wife knows a bit about rifles so I will get the wrath of the wife when I buy a rifle that costs 3 to 5 times what a .45-70 would cost.
