Hi all. Was looking at the remington 770 package from wss for my first rifle. I had heard from some they are a piece of junk but thought I would see what u guys thought. It is like I said my first rifle so would it even matter for the first year or two?

Stevens 200. Don't even bother with something problematic like that Remington when you can buy a winner for around $350 or less.

Buy the most rifle of the highest quality you can afford (including scope etc). It is something that you will have for a long time. There is no substitute for quality. A used quality rifle is most of the time better than a new bargain. When and if the time comes to sell you will at least have something of value in the trade and have spent more time shooting your rifle than having it in for repair.

buy a quality used from the forum.there are some great buys for some great quality guns here.also it will hold its value better for resale than the 770.i have bought a couple off here and have been more than happy:D.plus most have been used and have had the bugs and problems worked out of them.

Stay away from the 770.

Buy a used rifle instead. I paid in the $400 range for my favourite rifle (Ruger M77 in .308) with a scope a few years ago. Its light years ahead of a 770 in quality of build, looks, and reliability. It also shoots sub MOA so I doubt the 770 beats in accuracy.

I wouldn't take a Remington 770 to a dog fight. :puke:

Check out the Marlin XL7 or XS7. There have been a couple big threads here on CGN with rave reviews from many, myself included.

.

SuperCub is right on the money. I own a Marlin XS7 (in 7mm-08) and it is well designed and manufactured and accurate right out of the box. You will need to buy a scope, however, since they do not come with open sights as far as I know. I handled a Remington 770 in the store back at the time and didn't even give it a second thought. Even my Savage Edge (now the Axis) is far superior to the 770. I own two Remingtons I just love, but the 770 is just plain junk in my opinion.

Did anyone get the on line Remmington survey? I did, and look out customer service, honesty is comming your way. And it ain't all that flattering! Based on owning over 20 700's, 6 7's, a couple of 788's, a 597 POS, an 1100, some 870's, a 742, 760, 3 mowhawks, to name a few. I still cherish my custom 700 BDL SS DM and 7 SS lam, but these were older guns, and built right.

I agree with C Broad Arrow, Blasted and Blackie... spend your money on a quality used rifle. You may have to look at many of them, but you will be getting something of known quality. No rifle is perfect, but some are better than others, and the 770 is designed to fit a specific segment of the market. Thankfully, you have the benefit of all of these experienced hunters to steer you in the right direction.

The savage 111 package is excellent! Bought it from WSS for, I think $419 and it shoots sub MOA out of the box. Great rifle!

Thans guys for all the help, sounds like I may have made a reeeaalllyyyy bad mistake. I took another look online at wss and on the ee. Merry xmas

I would suggest not buying one as they are problematic. I've worked in the business for a few years now and it is the most returned firearm. It has the worst bolt ever and is just not worth the money. Buy a savage rifle or marling instead it will pay off in the long run.
