Hello all. I have 2 old rifles and 2 old shot guns due for a facelift. I would like to try some bead blasting to clean them up. A couple have pitting. I would like to eventually refinish a sps remington but want to practice on my older ones first. I own a top fed sand blaster already. I have read that alluminum oxide may be the way to go. Any info would help. Thanks

If there not very expensive rifles/shotguns then you could just use glass bead. I use it all the time when I refinish old $100-$150 guns. When you get to the Remington sps just use walnut or plastic bead.

Thanks for the input. Can I use a regular sandblaster? Mine was purchased from Princess auto. Should I set my air pressure to a specific amount?

Clean the sand or aluminum out of it and fill it with glass.Try it on some scrap to set the pressure .That and varying the blast distance.
You should have a sand blasting cabinet but in a pinch a large clear lawn bag can be used

what are you planning on using for a finish? if it's going to be a baked on type finish like gun kote..then you want to blast it with 120 grit aluminum oxide at 20-40 psi.

Yes, Im going to try a bake on finish or a simple spray on finish. Flat black for colour and I like the light rough matte finish. Dont want it to eat rags but dont really like a smooth finish. Ill start on my least valuable 50.00 dollar single shot 12g. Does anyone know if all blasters are the same? Do i need a specific size or type of tip? Thanks for all the help.

Aluminum oxide for spray on finishes. Glass beads ,on a microscopic level, round the edges. You want a rough surface for you finish to adhere. Glass beads are great for blueing because blueing treats the metal. Hope that helps.
