Bead of Remington 870

Many are crimped in place, and not threaded. Look at the base of the bead, if the serrations on the rib have been flattened then it is probably crimped. Remington has beads both crimped and threaded.

It appears my bead is pressed on so my DIY attempts to remove it are over. Ill have to take it to a gunsmith to get drilled and threaded so I can install a screw in fibre optic bead.

You need to post more info. You planning on putting the same bead back on?
Lodi mentions a rib. Your 870 have one?
All this stuff makes some difference. So does the material the bead is made of. They're not necessarily metal any more.

If this is a newer express barrel it is NOT threaded. It's pressed into the bead base from the underside and then brazed to the barrel. If you try to remove it thinking it has threads you will damage the bead or snap it off completely.

It is not removable, and it's also difficult to drill out because the remnants of the bead will remain in the hollow of the bead base and make re threading for an over size bead a real PITA.

I learned this the hard way!

Do yourself a favor, and stay away from the fiber optic beads, they often result in people focusing on the bead, rather than the target.

I like the fiber optic bead for low light situations. I use the same gun and barrel for all my hunting and shooting applications. From early morning low light turkey hunting, to the last light of goose hunting. I like to see the bead no matter what.

I believe it is Dead Ringer that makes the bead I want to put on. I like that they aren't as long as the clip on fiber optic ones.

You can get a tritium bead that will epoxy over the existing, probably cheaper and gives excellent low/no light usage.

^^But they're also huge, just got one for my 18.5. I am absolutely no pro, but I do find myself focusing a bit too much on my fibre optic on my bird gun.

It's a very common bad habit to get into. I have instantly improved people's skeet scores, by removing the fiber optic beads from their shotgun.

What color and type of bead do you recommend?

Most of my shotguns have a plain white bead. If they have interchangeable beads, I install the smallest white one that there is. However, I don't notice the bead anyways, so to me, it wouldn't matter if the gun didn't have a bead at all.
