Thought that I would post a couple of photos of the targets that we will be shooting at on this coming Saturday with our annual bead shoot. You keep score with glass beads rather than punching holes in a score card. Ground is not quite as green as in the accompanying photos. To put some perspective on distances, the elephant is 50 yards, the coyote is 125 yards and the moose is 150 yards. The moose has been living a charmed life so far, both in practice and competition.

Roundball only. Part of black powder tradition deals with the glass beads traded to the various native tribes in North America. Also the targets are 3/8 mild steel plate and shot mostly from ranges of 25 to 75 yards somewhat randomly spaced. They would not stand up to cartridge shooting and even with round ball and moderate loads, have to be replaced about every 3 years, We could make them thicker but that would put people shooting smaller calibers at a disadvantage because you have to see the target move to get the point. The moose and the coyote are far enough away that you can hear the splat of a hit but closer ones the sound of a hit is usually too close in time to the bang of the gun

That moose has not had a totally charmed life- I claim first rights with a hit to the shoulder at rendezvous July 2/14 and a few others did the same day. Target won't need repainting for a while tho'. Challenge is good for the spirit.
