bean bag?

i have been looking into beanbag rounds for a 12ga anyone used them?

If you think less-lethal ammunition is a better choice for self-defense in Canada. It is not. Respond with deadly force if you feel threatened with deadly force or fear bodily harm to yourself or those in your care.

Crown: So why did you shoot the intruder with this "bean bag" ammunition?
You: It was the first thing at my disposal
Crown: Why did you even possess it?
You: If I ever had to shoot someone in my home, I thought it was better to use this than the real stuff.
Crown: So you were planning the armed defense of your home?
You: No, I just wanted the option
Crown: Mr. ######, if you felt like you had options, why did you shoot at this man?
You: I didn't say that!

and so on.

It's a disaster to use anything but the fastest and most effective means of ending aggression on yourself.

If you just want to have fun with the stuff, giddy up. But I could also see this happening:

Crown: Mr. ###xx, the police report says you had less-lethal ammunition at your disposal, why didn't you use that instead?
You:

The poster didn’t say what he wanted them for, maybe he needs them to get some nuisance bears moving out of his neighbourhood.

00 Buck or slugs work better for that.
Even those "Bear-Bangers" which are basically shotgun-fired fireworks are better than bean-bags.
Why would you want to shoot something you don't intend to kill? If you just want to scare it off, no need to shoot it directly.

Does anyone remember when Norm Gardner (Toronto councillor), who had an ATT and carried a Glock, had to shoot a robber in his bakery?

The conventional wisdom is, shoot to stop, aim to centre of body mass etc. But he shot the guy on the outside of his thigh as I recall. And I do not recall anyone in the legal system saying he should have shot to kill. I got the impression from the news etc. that, if anything, the way he handled it with a less than lethal shot was looked on favourably. He went for preservation of human life and I don't recall any criticism he received on that point.

The link above appears to be from Canada and mentions beanbag and rubber rounds for bears. One thing I read years ago about carrying a shotgun in bear country suggested loading the first two slugs as rubber(plastic), then the rest as lead. The bear gets to make up his mind how determined he is to make you a meal. This of course would be for those who considered shooting a bear to be an absolutely last resort.

Shoot them if you got them !
To each there own ... as long as it is legal.
I have a few that where given ti me by an RCMP officer a few years ago.
They make a great addition to the ammo collection and conversation starter amongst collectors.
But, if there was some yahoo shooting them in my neighbor hood under the guise of animal control I seriously would call Bravo Sierra.
We have trained professionals to do that (LEO or COs') just my coffee addled opinion this morning.

I can't believe the number of non-experts on this thread enjoying themselves talking about things that they DON'T SQUAT about.
It's a decent question that deserves a decent answer.
I've purchased both bean bag and rubber 12gauge from Kodiak Wildlife Products in Canmore Alberta (macecanada.com).
I've used both bean and rubber on grizzly and polar bear to good effect.
Anybody trying to use 00 buck on a polar or grizzly would end up being called lunch then bear sh**.
I solo canoe and kayak in the barren lands for weeks on end and have had to scare off the odd grizzly with rubber/bean slugs.
I had no intentions of letting them get close enough for a deadly shot. You can/should use a non-lethal round from a decent distance whereas a lethal round needs to be fired from a relatively close distance. If you've ever seen a wounded and severely pissed off grizzly you'll know that a well placed slug has to be fired at close range to be accurate.

Laugh2 now THAT'S what I call effective farming! But really back to the OP's topic. I am not quite sure if bean-bag rounds would be considered "exotic ammunition" as per the regulations but from what I read, these are readily accessible. The OP didn't sate whether they would be used for home/wildlife defense so I will reserve my judgement, but I too am interested in this type of ammo purely for its "wow" factor in my collection. If you can legally obtain it and you don't act like bubba with it, then I say stock up on it!

Hey bubba ..
Yeah wat???

Twack - up side the head!

ROFLMAO.....

Where we have bear problems in Ontario (North of Toronto) caused from the people who voted to cancel the spring bear hunt we just don’t want to shoot every bear that wonders in the yard. If a bear is hanging around causing trouble and just won’t leave this type of ammunition will sometimes pursued them to leave as others have explained. If I shot every bear that was hanging around I would have had 13 last year, just doesn’t make sense does it. Trust me my neighbourhood isn’t as bad as some in other northern areas either.
