Bean Bags...

I would never use rubber on a bear, just will piss him off.....if ya gotta shoot a bear, better shoot to kill him, cause chances are he's gonna try and get you...

This is for home security not bear defense. Since I can't use the rubber slug or a bean bag with my shotgun because of my modified choke, the rubber buckshots should be ok right?

Hey, guys, just kidding. There have been a ton of "bear defense" threads going around ever since I joined this excellent site.
"Bean bag" is obviously a "home security" load. (Unless you expect a bear to drop to the ground and put it's paws behind it's back.) Please disregard my comment and continue with your topic!
BTW, you'll even get charged for shooting an armed B&E dirtbag with a pea shooter, regardless. Shoot away as far as I'm concerned. What's that famous quote?
"Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6"...
Damn straight. I digress...

Ok, stupid question time. So the police can't use beanbags or other SIMs without specialized training in their use on humans. Cause hey they're only less lethal not nonlethal right, kind of like using an extended range baton. So for home defense, you shoot a human with a beanbag and oh say hit his chest by mistake and kill him, probably a bad thing, right. So I'm guessing for liability reasons no retailers are selling them to folks untrained in their applications, for home defense. And as some guys suggest their not useable for bear defense.... then what are they actually marketted toward?

I sell lots to folks that use them against deer and dogs. They don't want to kill them, but they do want to chase them off their property. They are pretty good deterents.

Can be used for all of the above, but one needs to understand the limitations of anything they are using. If you used one on home defence and managed to kill someone well...you are using a shotgun in home defence, so I would hope that one is using it in the right context.

I'd use them for Black Bears as a deterent, but after the first shot you can bet the following will be slugs. 8)

If you use less lethal ammo for self defense against a person and it works exactly as planned, you still had best be in a situation where lethal force is authorized.

If using bags against bears, the best solution is a second person with a big bore rifle, or chambered slugs backing you up. Most bears are likely just snooping and will retreat, but an aggressive bear is far more likely to charge you if you piss him off. If alone, and the bear is aggressive use the slugs first, then the bag

I found this neat pic of a Bean bag shell:

And this page of oh so sweet goodies:

Also of note check out these tactical pouches:

I like the quote about the hydro-kinetic bag:

"A direct fire 12 gauge round which fires an aerodynamic, liquid filled, impact projectile with marking capabilities and...

...behavior modification."

Doesn`t that sound like a really small water ballon?..

I wonder how it would be to use Super Balls, you know the ones that seem to rebound for about half an hour! :D
Just think about it: pump six fast rounds into a room where the burglar is hiding and close the door quick!
PP.

Now that is a great idea, put two per shell...couse the collateral damage might out weigh the 'Ha-Ha factor'...........love to see the look on the guys face though...

Remember guys, if you're using non-lethal deterrents, have someone reliable with a reliable gun back you up in case you experience a jam, short stroke or other malfunction.

Don't worry Geo' I do it all the time.

Tytanium... Only thing really mentioned as a no-no in the regs for Shotgun ammo is Flachetts (tiny darts).

Of course the courts would prob' not view your case as 'self defence' if you poured gas all over your attacker and shot him with a Flare round.

Bean bag and rubber rounds ARE used regularly for bear 'conditioning'. :) rather than defense.

If a bear is found around a camp or city area, it's often effective to whack 'em in the ass with a bean bag or similar round. It 'simulates' what another bear'd do to them chasing them off his turf. Often they get the message loud and clear and stay away. Not always tho.

But - that is NOT a defense situation. That's a non-hostile bear in an undesirable area being driven off BEFORE it's a problem.
