This incident did not take place here, and I do not have first hand knowledge as to where it took place, when, or who was involved, but the pics are self explanitory.

That happened near Kimmirut (formerly Lake harbour), Baffin Island, Hudson Strait a few years ago. Chap recovered, was extremely lucky. There was a bit of hesitation about shooting the bear, with the mauling being the result. Friend of mine shot a bear coming into his tent in the same general area. He was sitting up in his sleeping bag, bear was just off the muzzle of the 870, slug took the bear through the corner of the eye. Healthy 400 lb female. Eye to eye contact when he fired.

That is some fu**ed up , why would a fella not have an alarm system and a mini gun if he or she wishes for a distant 30 meter approach. Inside tent , 14'' extend a mag 870 3 inch slug/ssg mix and match, And if you get really drunk, you gotta sleep in a cage. Infact any idiot who sleeps out there during active bear time, should have a cage around a tent.

Yes, that was my friend's thought. After firing, he shortstroked the 870 - was a bit stressed at the time - fortunately the bear was stone dead. Apparently in the incident pictured, the bear should have been shot sooner, rather than later. The chap who was mauled was a guide. Realistically, if you are on the land, there is always the possibility of a bear encounter. It doesn't happen all that often, but it is best to be prepared.

A freind of mine was working in that country a couple of summers ago - I'll pass that along to him.
Thanks

When dealing with problem bears always pick a mark or fixed distance and tell yourself if the bear crosses that I'm going to shoot it. Otherwise one tends to wait too long, as the bear gets closer and closer, sometimes with unhappy results.

I've seen (first hand) the same results from an encounter with a grizzly.

My response to bears, for the past 40 years or so, has been to shoot first and ask questions later. So far, I'm winning.

wow guys, I have seen some nasty stuff but that is down right terrifying! No wonder my old man used to sleep with a cocked and locked defender in our tent as a kid...
