My brother-in-law wants to go on a bear hunt when he gets back from the Afganistan. What should I be using to bait for bears? Is putting a pile of oats out enough? I have never baited them before and need some advice.

You should find a place to bait that has some bear sign, they like it thick with some water source nearby. If you put the bait out in the open you won't see as many bears as in the thick stuff. You need a "stink bait", rotten meat or fish that will bring them in from a distance to get them started. Put this bait up in a tree where they can't reach it, in a plastic bucket or something with the lid open a bit. Then feed them grain, old do nuts, fat from local burger joints, old bread and bagels from a commercial bakery, animal grade molasses from a feed mill anything you can get cheap. Once they start coming put the bait out at least a couple of times a week. It's a lot of work if you have to drive a ways.

For a stink bait i use old meat scraps and fish that i hang from a tree in a bucket. For food i usually just use bread and molasses and anything else that tastes really sweet. Bears have quite a sweet tooth.

well used deep fryer oil was the kicker for me last year not need to handle carcasses etc. I heard a Beaver carcass is the best if you can get one but Ill keep going with the oil as I can get it from a dozen chip stands open at when I start baiting. Once they starting coming they will probably feed on the oats, I would add something to sweeten it like molasses. Ive been using 50lb Molasses Sweet feed for Horses and they come back for it every time.
