what about the pooh bear LOL

i use a 7mm mag if i'm in grizz country, other wise it's a .308
yer 6.5 should do the trick on blackies.
shot placement is always key regardless

I like using my 270. Shot placement is key as with any caliper.
One shot at 230 yards:)

What is a good caliber for taking down a bear? I was thinking of buying myself a 6.5x55. would this be recommended for bear hunting?

depends on the bear ...... and if it's only for bear hunting ........

the only time i have ever felt undergunned with my 6.5x55 was when i was covered in moose blood , with 1/2 a moose on my 4wheeler and i could hear a grizz 20- 30 feet away from me , but could not see him due to the thick brush . ( he was following me , walking parrellel to the trail i was on ) .

Where you are matters. The 6.5 x 55 will kill any game you care to hunt. You may have trouble finding ammo in small places though.

I seen a 300 pound black bear get killed with one shot from a 22lr to the head just sayin...And one time i was partridge hunting and had one charge me and i filled his face with #6 birdshot and he didin't wiggle a toe after that...By no means do i suggest tryin either of these but if it's you or him and it's all you got, well, you get the picture.

Other then that I'd say 30-06 with 180 grains of whatever bullet you like or 308 with the same!! :D

Over bait, a 12 gauge slug (maybe even a 20) is all you need. I've never spot-and-stalked bear, but if I did, I'd want to use a rifle that would drop them fast, as they are no fun to track; BUT, I'd also want a fast-handling, fast-shooting rifle, in case I got into trouble chasing one through thick brush.

Obviously, it also depends what species you are hunting.

I would use this as an excuse to go with something in a large bore rifle! :D

I am debating getting a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 myself.

I am also very interested in a Ruger Alaskan in .375 Ruger! Kinda liking the ballistics of the Ruger a little more! Would be great for large bears and moose. LOL

I agree with Coach. Over bait a shotgun with slugs is awesome. My 930 mossberg with lyman 1.25 oz slugs work real well.

Of my collection I would choose the Marlin GS 45/70 for a stalk. It is short and has a heavy hitting round. Not that I have stalked a bear.

I've shot black bears with everything form .223 to .375 Ruger (and everything in between)

6.5x55 or it's modern equivalent the .260, should do just fine.:)
