Personally I would keep your eye open for a gun you like and that fits you. Don't worry too much about caliber. As long as its .243 or bigger your good to go.

or set up close and shoot a shoot a slug from a smooth bore if thats all you have. Bears go down easy. Just keep in the lower 2/3rds of the boiler room.

They are there to eat the bait not you, no need to send them into orbit, just kill it.

I find with any dangerous animail that can harm you bigger is better, you never know. Better to have aliitle more power then worry about having to place another shot under pressure

I just got my first bear a week ago with a 7.62x54r (svt40) 203gr 50-60 yards, I'm glad he dropped quick because it was only an entrance hole and there was not a drop of blood to be seen anywhere. It took a minute or two to even find the hole. But it did the job quite effectively.
