Bear Caliber?

Personally I would keep your eye open for a gun you like and that fits you. Don't worry too much about caliber. As long as its .243 or bigger your good to go.

or set up close and shoot a shoot a slug from a smooth bore if thats all you have. Bears go down easy. Just keep in the lower 2/3rds of the boiler room.

They are there to eat the bait not you, no need to send them into orbit, just kill it.
 
I just got my first bear a week ago with a 7.62x54r (svt40) 203gr 50-60 yards, I'm glad he dropped quick because it was only an entrance hole and there was not a drop of blood to be seen anywhere. It took a minute or two to even find the hole. But it did the job quite effectively.
