Bear/Cougar Defense Shotgun Advice Please?

Whats the weight of the Fabarm shotguns? I hear they are an aluminum reciever patterned after the 870. 14" barrel would get you down to 32" or less with a short stock. For hands free, a 2 point adjustable sling keeps the shotgun right infront of you, with your hands free for your work. Quicker to draw than a handgun (ATC carry requires a holster with strap) It also distributes the weight of the gun better making longer periods easier on your body. A padded VCAS sounds like a good investment. I need to run more rounds through my HP-9 (DA grizzly) to tell if it is reliable now that Ive fixed the issues it had from the factory but I do like the short 32.5" OAL. For serious no compromise performance, the 14" Supernova would be my choice. Collapses to 31" and it lighter than an 870. Far and above way better action than the 870 and even Mossberg. Just my 2 cents.

Hmmm....

The question is your safety/mobility... and you have access to the carry handgun permit.

If it were me, I'd never, ever compromise my safety... The threat you face is real, yet you must remain productivity in your work.

Do a little role taking... think of your family... The 'hassle' you conjure up about a handgun is just that, a mind trap. It is ok to say you are uncomfortable with possessing a handgun, and my reply is that is what practice is for. Handguns are absolutely to be respected, and they are intimidating for a new shooter.

And in your case, your handgun availability in the outdoors.... Restricted / non-restricted is just a classification. Yes, for those of us without a trappers or prospectors license, we can't take handguns out into the woods.

The exception for men & women with carreers such as yours was enacted for YOUR SAFETY... SO please reconsider, and protect yourself as you are entitled to do.

If you have a gun range in your general area, I guarantee you that you can find someone to help you practice and handle your handgun.

Sincerely bro...

A PG shotgun in a scabbard on your vest will only defend against bears who are intimidated by mall-ninjas. An actual aggressive bear will have you down before you get a chance to use it.
If you don't "need" a pistol, then you really don't "need" a shotgun.

Since the Gov't has decided that my recreational use of the same area doesn't require such protection I run a 12.5" 870 with 13" LOP butt and a VCAS.

You make some very compelling points and you have convinced me to go with this option for the future. But gonna go with the shotgun for now.

Black bears make a lot of noise in the bush and from my experience I usually hear them before I see them. Also from my experience so far I have been able to scare off all black bears that have tried to approach me. Just looking for a little extra insurance out there, just in case.

Cougars IMO are the ones that are going to pounce on you without you knowing they are there.

Sure some bears are noisy, but not all. With cougars you will be fighting from a position of already having been attacked, try getting to a longer SG on your vest with a cougar clamped onto you.

Either run a good sling and short SG, or just get a pistol which is the best option.

Another option that I think Driller on these forums (Yukon geologist) uses is the Mare's Leg. Cheapest is the Rossi Ranch Hand. Chiappa and Henry make more expensive versions. Get it in 44 magnum -- it's not the ideal bear round but it's very light, compact (24-25" I think), non-restricted and better than nothing.

As I said before, you should consider a Mares Leg on a short single-point sling (or holster) in 44 mag.
At 24" OAL it is the shortest, lightest non-R you can legally carry in the bush if you forego the wilderness ATC. There are many experienced guys who aren't hunting but spending time in the bush and need a defence gun who have chosen to go this route.

I just checked them out online. The Henry ($$$) and the Rossi ($$) and I like them both, a lot. Small, light, .44mag and non-restricted. Definitley an option for me, Thanks. Decision decisions.
