Bear defence course

Here's a short course, walk in the woods,load up, can't see past 30 ft, chamber a round. You should already have rounds in the mag after leaving the car or truck. It really gets thick, finger on the safety , ready to move it from right to left(for a right handed gun/person). Keep a good grasp on the firearm with 2 hands, If charged without warning, choke up on the gun , not to have it swiped away. Any questions?:D ;)

Yeah OK instuctor Levi, but what type of plastic underwear is best for sideways s**tmyself:D
I was kinda looking for that guy that had done the course or was instucting.I have a buddy who is doing some survey work and never handled a shotgun before.My advice as to what load and when to shoot, would not be from personal experience, but from what I THINK might be best. I always seem to have a rifle when I'm in the bush not a shotgun.

LOL, Would not recommend a firearm if you don't know how to shoot it. And as for knowing when , wing it, which is what you would most likely do if not practiced.:)

There are some courses being run around Prince George.

I make it a point to practice everytime I go into the bush, this also makes sure that my gun is working properly, practice with target loads and 2 ¾ “ slugs. I took some big chunks of cardboard drew bears on them and used those as targets. Also cycle your ammo every year. I used to mix 00 buck and slugs, based on discussions I use all slugs now and start out with 2 ¾” for accuracy and then 3” to finish it off or when it’s up close and personal.

Calum is referring to Gary Shelton. Unfortunately unless you are coming to Bella Coola anytime soon I think you will be out of luck, Gary isn't doing training courses on the road anymore for the most part. If you want top get 15 or so guys together for a road trip to Bella Coola I probably could set a course up for you ;) I would recommend your friend read Gary's books as well as take a good course.
Both basic aspects of bear defence; understanding bears and their behaviour, and effective training and use of a defence system (shotgun, bearspray etc) are equally important.

Murray Charlton in Brentwood Bay has been conducting bear defence courses with live fire exercises, I have no direct experience with his bear knowledge but some of the logging companies I used to deal with used Murray and enjoyed his course.

The Company who does the courses in the Prince George to Terrace area is "North America Wilderness Training". I've taken it twice and I support their teachings 100%....well worth the $$

Thanks guys,I will pass all this along and hope my buddy talks to one of these guys. If he doesn't I guess I'll be helping him with my own course ala levi.That story of the two elk hunters makes ya think huh:(
