Bear defence.... no, I'm serious.

What should I carry in the wilds of BC for Bear protection, and hunting?

It's funny you would say that. I remember when the outlaw first came out you were one of the biggest advocats of it. And calling everyone that had anything negative to say about it a "Fudd". What happened were the "Fudds" right?? Here's a nice pic of you shooting your beloved outlaw. :)

I do field work in cat and bear country here in southern BC and carry a slung M870 with 20" rifle sighted bbl and unplugged mag with slugs when walking the more remote fields. No mag extensions, fancy sights, folding stocks, flashlites, strap-on ammo carriers or any other gee-haws and whifftickers which make the gun heavier and more cumbersome. I'm carrying a forage stick, camera, GPS, and clipboard, so like to keep it as simple as possible.

One of the ranchers I work with told me I should sew a couple of big buttons on the back of my hat so a cat would think I had eyes on him and wouldn't try to sneak up on me from behind. I'm thinking I should just get a hat and gloves with those big googly eyes and maybe leave the gun in the truck.:p

But a short barrel CRF rifle with good iron sights in a powerful caliber that you can shoot well is better, right? ;)

For me it is and I think for you too, but everyone is different and folks have to decide for themselves what's best for their own situation. My pal Pounder carries a .458 Brno most of the time, but he actually prefers the feel of his '95 Marlin. The bear won't know the difference.

Where are y'all going that you are being attacked by bears so frequently? Must be a fair number of attacks that never get reported.

I am out there all year and have never had a problem. I still carry my 870 or 94, but I am more concerned with other people than the bears.

Some of us work in the north. Having a good rifle handy is just commonsense.

How Fuddly of you, you old Fudd. Perhaps the subtlty is lost on the Fuddiferous types, but while the Outlaw is great fun, and great for rabbits etc, it, like alot of other guns, including Remington 700s and AR15s, is not something I am willing to stake my life on... :p
I love you kept that picture though, you old curfuddgeon :D

You live in the maritimes. You don't need a bear defense gun, you need a Liberal defense gun. Nothing out their more dangerous than a charging bunny rabbit or a wild coyote. .22LR take care of either one.

Tell you what, in a weeks time I'll update my location, which will be smack damn in the middle of big bear country. Of course I like to be active, rather than reactive, and in a town where bears are known to wander into town etc, I choose to be better prepared, because I can.

Hat speaks for itself, I have never been attacked by a bear or a cougar :D

Actually, I like everything about that choice, except the mosins safety...which makes it a non-runner, though I did once used to use one for deer.

Russian firearms don't need regular safeties as Russians know what happens when one pulls the trigger. :D

I have read that the he safety on the Mosin is for storage not carry. :D

I took the time to make this. I'll be posting this on every "Bear Defense" thread. :D

Heres a series of pictures from our last situation that could have gone south in a hurry and again a sub-adult with an attitude:

It all ended well, no lives were lost, but at the outset you can never be sure of that.

Great for Rabbit's ? It's not really Sport when you club them in a pen with a sawed of chinese pos.

I could give you my sell you my ex. Believe me, no bear would want to have anything to do with her. She could just nag it and the bear would never ever returm. I guess that would be animal cruelty though. Better off just putting it out of its mysery.

Seriously though,

Sandman,

That is some of the best art work I've ever seen. I'm serious. I almost pissed myself.

Thanks for all the compliments everybody.

I still have the Photoshop negative, so I'll be able to replace the "Bear Defense" clip with other classics..... "Is this bullpup SKS stock legal?"...or... "What is the cheapest Sniper rifle"...our beloved..."OMG lol, I was playing MW2, and like I want a AK-47. I only have $200...NEEED HELPP NAOWW!!!"....list of threads goes on...d:h:

Cheers,

Well Dosing stopped by today on his way to his "new location". IMHO he should just run any bears over with his toyota.
Having shot, refinished, refinished again (after someone gave him a file) and shot his outlaw I have the same opinion.
Great little gun for plinking, rabbits, etc but until such time as I put several hundred rounds of various loads through it without any hiccups..I wouldn't use it as a self defense gun.
I'd go with a big bore lever gun or my marine magnum with an over sized safety.
Of course any bear with an iota of self respect wouldn't want anything to do with a goof in a sponge bob hat and gloves anyway! :D

Have a safe trip J.
