Bear Defence shotgun questions (bear with me please)......

Your advice hasn't fallen on deaf ears. no worries.
3" or 3.5", either way for me, I don't really have a choice one way or another. My 2200 is 3", all my existing 12G ammunition is 3", so I don't need to buy 2.75", Im looking for a 3" gun. Yes I know 2.75 is common, and have shot 2.75" slugs, 3" slugs etc.

Damn straight bears are unnerving. Try being IN the camp sleeping when one comes pounding on the door. My family comes first, If I don't HAVE to shoot a bear I won't, but I won't hesitate to if need-be. This Papa-Bear will fiercely protect my family regardless of being in season or not. We're 6km in the bush, boat access only. Remote!

We've been broken into by bears twice. Once when nobody was at the camp. Once I was there with my son (7yo). The time when my son was with me the bear ate a hole in the outside wall and got in the porch, clawing at the door to the main living are of the cottage. I was sitting right across from the door with a .30/30 just waiting for him to bust it open. Thankfully me yelling at him banging a pot turned him away. We were lucky.

I was looking at a Bear / Hog slug, and something to consider was hull length 2 3/4 vs 3. Several instances where private citizens and gov't agents had failure to extract a 3" shell in a 3" receiver. It seems some companies make longer hulls then others. In these instances the fired shell was longer and would not eject from the receiver; a one and done gun is not for me. 2 3/4 will reliably cycle in every 3" receiver.

Alaska recommends the Brenneke Black magic magnum for bear defence...but has been using the brenneke classic magnum for decades and is the issued round for LEO and F&G services.

There is a Canadian Brobee223 on youtube who did gel medium penetration tests for three slugs 1) Winchester forster slug, 2) Federal truball and 3) Royal Brenneke. Two of them had excellent penetration. He deals with grizzlies

If anyone finds a retailer for the Federal deep perpetrator or Brenneke please share

Thanks
Trevor

I've decided on 25 yards as my tolerance line, depending on conditions/terrain/bush.

Thats if the Bear lets you live that long....
My point is these threads dont amount to much.
Other than offer fantasy follies.
The guy in Bella Coola last fall hazed that Sow and her cubs is hired by the CO's and DFO to assist or to protect their staff when there are problem bears.
Most guys asking for advice in my opinion have never spent more than a few hours in the bush let alone in Grizzly country.
A class mate who went as a surveyors assistant back in the early 80's for summer work was in the thick of GB country and they never saw one let alone two.
One had a side arm the other had a shotgun and Pete spent lots of time carrying both.

How about Challenger slugs? They are easy to find and penetrate better than the Federal deep perpetrator or the Brenneke ...

And I just ordered a bunch of Deep Penetrators for my Tac-14 from TheShootingEdge ... they still have some in stock:

Thanks for taking the time and effort to do these tests; great information and much appreciated

the Rio Brenneke did well in your penetration test and retained most of its size (dia.)

Challenger slugs. your testing 10.5" group (largest group) at 50m plus misfire and than a second purchase showing poor QC with deformed wads and leaking powder is a hard pass.

thanks for the store info. reliable guns appears to have them in stock as well if you want 250.

Forgive me, but "ghost ring", is just a peep sight with a bigger opening, right?

Was thinking something like this:

Here is my 2 cents:

Personally, I have no issues with using knock-offs - I have a few Norcs, NCStar and other knock-off scopes, cheap knives, etc. However, I would never rely on one in any situation where the outcome could be serious. I won't even use them for hunting. I would not want to wound an animal or miss the shot of a lifetime because my gear crapped out. If I'm at the range and a scope craps out (hasn't happened yet, but...), I can take it off and drop it in the garbage, with no harm done.

So, if I were you, I would buy a tried and true gun model, and brand name accessories. As far as more than 3 rounds - fun to have at the range when you're playing, but I really doubt that, barring a zombie invasion, you would ever be in a situation where 3 shots would not be enough. Bear guns are short-range guns. More than 10 yards away, you're hunting, not defending yourself (IMHO). A bear can cover those 10 yards a heckuva lot faster than you can even get 3 rounds off. Instead, I would practice, practice, practice until you can make a kill zone shot (CNS) at 5 yards every single time, from the most awkward of positions.

I will, I have a box of new slugs to try out and I’ll give it a go. I’ll have to figure out how to post a video somehow, otherwise it’ll just be pics I’ll have to post. Will try with a couple shotguns I want to test these slugs out in.

It's the honour system here on CGN. Just get the time from your video and post your results on the old necro thread.

Don't short stroke! ;)

Haha, I’ll try not to.

That 12.5” barrel I had threaded showed some real promise with slugs at 15y, challengers shot poa/poi at 15-20y with IC, mod, IM and full chokes. Mod, IM gave me great bird and buckshot patterns, full choke was good as well. Very happy with the tru choke patterns so far.
