Here is a US government publication for civilians with defense from bear attacks in mind.

Various calibers were tested for penetration.

I carry a 12g Remington 870 with me when I'm out at remote tower sites, as it frequently puts me inside bear country.

What have your experiences been?

Also, who carries Brenneke slugs in Canada?

I used brennekes on a wild boar, in Saskatchewan once. I plugged him at 75 yards (lots of prior range time) and had complete pass through. Boar fell there and was demised in less than one minute. One calibre size hole in, one slightly ragged exit out. I used the classic Brenneke Rotweill 2 3/4 inch 1 1/8 ounce slug with the greyish almost see thru plastic hull.
These have been made for smoothbore barrels, and are a proven dependable design.

They are also made in 3 inch. One step further up is the Black Magic Rotweill slug too.
I do not know of anyone who stocks these Black Magic slugs in Canada.

These Brennekes, are the bee's knees for critter defence...

Stores I know have that sold them recently are:
Accuracy Plus out of Peterbourough
Wholesale Sports in Calgary/Edmonton/Saskatoon

Cheers

Cool, thanx for the link. :)

But for the record, I'm pretty confidant in my 300 Win Mags abilities in a bear defense situation. :)

1983, time to do a new one, many pistol calibres out there not covered, also attutdes change, a sidearm is a good idea as a backup if you can carry.
