Bear defense.... 4 bore rifles.

4 or 5 years ago, a Purdey 4 bore double was consigned through a friend's gun shop here in Ottawa. While I never got to shoot it, I did get to handle it and it was a MONSTER. I would love to have owned it, but it sold for over $20K as I recall, and was out of reach.

VERY cool guns. I like that rebuilt single shot he shoots at the end. Would love one like that.

Here is a picture of a 8 bore muzzle loading rifle beside a 45 cal Hawken, both guns weight about the same

The bottom picture shows a Greener 4 bore shot gun that was sold in Africa by WG Rawbone and was likely used as a ball gun as the chokes were taken off the barrels reregulated. Bores are .995 and is for 4 inch brass cases. It weighs 19 pounds

Cool guns - yours? Do you shoot them?

I have not shot the 4 bore yet but have everything to start loading up some ammo, I was lucky enough to fire a 4 bore double rifle at one time.
The 8 bore I have fired a fair amount

Is "lucky" the right term? What kind of muzzle velocity do you get/expect from them? 4 bore, so 1750 gr ball?

You might only make 1500 fps at the muzzle with 320 grains of powder but that would give you 7500-8000 lbs of energy at the muzzle (with a 4oz ball).

Have no idea what it would be packing "down range" but probably more than enough to stop most anything on the planet including a couple of light armoured vehicles :)

nice to see several together, makes those wimpy 458s look like the chump guns they are

Nice video and thanks for sharing with us.
Considering the sum of money those things will command at auction I for one will stick with my "chump " guns.
As " wimpy " as they are, they will easily kill anything I need..... and they are paid for...

This is a wonderful video I learned something new.

I shot a 8ga in 1984 but it was on a tri-pod and still kick like 2 mules and a horse, I was sure this was the biggest it ever got till I saw
this video thanks for the UFI this is stuff I can talk about at the gun club.

Samuel Baker, explorer and elephant hunter of the black powder era had a 2-bore:

"Among other weapons, I had an extraordinary rifle that carried a half-pound percussion shell—this instrument of torture to the hunter was not sufficiently heavy for the weight of the projectile; it only weighed twenty pounds: thus, with a charge of ten drachms [270 grains] of powder, behind a half-pound shell, the recoil was so terrific, that I spun around like a weathercock in a hurricane. I really dreaded my own rifle, although I had been accustomed to heavy charges of powder, and severe recoil for some years. None of my men could fire it, and it was looked upon with a species of awe, and it was named "Jenna-El-Mootfah" (Child of a Cannon) by the Arabs, which being far too long a name for practice, I christened it the "Baby;" and the scream of this "Baby" loaded with a half-pound shell was always fatal. It was far too severe, and I very seldom fired it, but it is a curious fact, that I never fired a shot with that rifle without bagging: the entire practice, during several years, was confined to about twenty shots. I was afraid to use it; but now and then it was absolutely necessary that it should be cleaned, after months of staying loaded. On such occasions my men had the gratification of firing it, and the explosion was always accompanied by two men falling on their backs (one having propped up the shooter), and the "Baby" flying some yards behind them. This rifle was made by Holland & Holland, of Bond Street, and I could highly recommend it for the Goliath of Gath, but not for the men of A.D. 1866."

I don't doubt that. I was referring more to the carnage on the butt end. Probably feel like a car accident when you pull the trigger....

The load I shot was 400 grains of 2F powder and a 1750 grain bullet, from what I have read 200 pound recoil and from my experience yes, I shot it twice and that was enough for 1 day
