Bear Defense for Women

It's pretty hard to beat a Lee Enfield for a truck gun. How long is this rifle? Would a cheap Ramline stock help? And I am curious about the rifle misfeeding after the first round...were the rims of the second and third rounds binding?

Get a look at a Ruger 77/44. Same size & weight basically as a 22.

Magazine fed so it can be stored unloaded and mag inserted in a second or two.

The biggest thing is to have your mom shoot 30 rounds a year from now on...

Not exactly sure what caused the miss feed. Whether it was unfamiliarity, magazine failure, debris or otherwise.

My brother, and a lot of you, are suggesting a 20 gauge or a 30-30 (come to think of it i wanted to check out those leverolution rounds anyways) so maybe ill look into those. I heard a rumor about there being 20 gauge remington 870s but i wasnt having much luck on their site last night. They exist or just a myth?

Your story has a familure ring to it. My father passed away a couple of years ago and where they lived, there is a bear that hangs around, so my own mother faces a simular delema. However, she got remarried to a fellow who has a No.5 jungle carbine, so problem solved.

But that had me thinking about what caused the miss feed. You mentioned in your story that the mag had been left loaded for over ten years. I'm thinking that the LE hadn't been lubricated in that time either. That would cause feeding issues to the inexperienced shooter also.

A No.5, regular practice and lighter loads for your mom may be an option too, maybe? The No.5's are a little shorter, plus your mom already seems to be familure with Lee Enfields, so less of a learning curve for her.

Only a suggestion. :) cheers

How about a mare's leg rifle chambered in a cartridge suitable for detering/killing a bear and a set of ear muffs kept with it that could be put on quickly to protect her ears.

This would be lighter, powerful and very manouverable it tight quarters. You could put a regular butt stock on it if she prefers to shoulder it. The muffs would allow her to fire as soon as needed (indoors) and not have to retreat to the security of the van.

As others have stated I would definitely recommend a mare's leg. They are extremely short and maneuverable but still pack a punch with the .44. Also a pair of ear muffs right beside the rifle would be a good idea.

Here is a link to a supporting dealer with the mare's leg.

Just my .02

How about an sks?.. They are cheap and ammo is too. Not suggesting she use military surplus ammo for bears, just target practice.

Every lady that ive introduced to the sks has loved it, for its lack of recoil and fun factor blasting at rocks and such in gravel pits. She will always want to practice with it, they are so much fun...

Down side is they are a bit heavy though.

Just got a 20 in a junior Remington 870 in last week -- ordered it from Caballas

When I was a kid, my mom dropped a nuisance bear from her bedroom window with a 308 blr. She could toss that thing around like a 22. Her 22 ruger pistol was an extension of her arm. She could hit a can and tap it again while it was moving on the ground. No matter how many times I tried I couldn't match her. 357 mag 25 yard shots at 6 cans, she outshot everone every time. I dare say mom would have tossed a 338 and killed that bear if dad had one! My sister Packs a 12 gage pump during bear season on their property. The 44 mag might be a descent idea. My wife is small and has no shooting experience. She handled my 44 mag mares leg easily. Bget a stock though.

Chiappa makes a compact 92 lever action carbine with 12.5 inch berral in 357mag,44mag,and 45colt
I put a full stock on a Rossi ranch hand 44mag with the full stock it is naw my go to rifle

Now here's a nice setup:D:

Nice, probably a little long though, haha. Im pretty sure I have it narrowed down to a 20 or 12 gauge remington 870 or a 30-30 or 44 mag lever (probably a marlin). Ill be replacing the foregrip with one of those flashlight mounting units. Id like to go with an over top folding stock but im not sure if that would interfere with one of those burris fastfires....

Regardless what I get her, Ive decided to send it away and get it ARMA coated bright pink and white. I figure that way, its definitely a girls gun and my dad wont try to use it himself. She can have her own bear protection.

My wife's rifle is a 21" .30/06 Husqvarna 1600 carbine with the LOP cut to 12" with the Decelerator, XS ghost ring and post sights with a Ruger scalloped barrel band front sight base, and a Safari Ching Sling. Her ammo is 180 gr TSXs loaded to 2700 as her 1:12 twist isn't happy with my 240 gr Woodleighs.

#1 - good to hear your mom got nothing more than a bad scare
everytime the conversation officers here put down an aggressive bear they get raked over the coals yet nothing like this ever makes the news - kills me.
I would go with a 12 g. sxs coach gun (short)
and not worry to much about reduced loads ,you never feel it/ hear it when any animal is in your sights

this is when handgun laws suck. be nice to keep a revolver in the cabin. i would go with a sxs 12 or 20 gauge with buck shot

well we know 4x4 posts are out, maybe a 6x6"?

joking aside, that would have been a scary ordeal for her, it sounds like your adressing this properly though. my vote is an 870 or norinco equivalent.

Keep the Enfield. I am presuming it is a No2 Mk4. The magazine can easily be replaced. She is already familiar with the rifle (the 174 fmj comment). There was obviously enough time, I normally keep the rifle unloaded but I bought 6 $1.50 stripper clips with the ammo ready to be inserted when needed. After all, most Canadian soldiers in WWII praised that rifle.

That would be my suggestion. Get another magazine and some stripper clips. If it is a MkIII, upgrade to a No2 Mk4....every rifle shop has them.

Also, what happened to that gutshot bear? I'm hoping it crawled off and died...but a wounded bear is not fun.

just a thought

Would an 870 with a Spec ops stock work for her. The Gen II version has 7 length settings. The claim is 85% recoil reduction. That may make it do-able for your Mom. I know you mentioned that you don't really what to go the 12 g route but this might be an option to put on the chalk board for consideration.
