Bear defense question...

Boomer, I have been buying my 405gr WLNGC's from Beartooth Bullets in the States. Check out the Ballistic Corner to see why it is really a waste of time to get a 475 over the 454.

Win 38-55 I agree to a point with you saying but I also know that penetration is the key no matter how good your shot placement is and when that bullet fails to reach into that grizzlies brain is why I would never carry any light round for bear defense.

When I am in areas that I feel I need to protect myself against dangerous animals I'll take my 405gr to 550gr 45-70 loads and if I am limited to a handgun it will be my 300gr to 405gr 454 Casull loads.

I recall a story I read years ago. A fellow in BC had a dog that ran off after a grizzly, when the grizzly turned the dog ran back to his master for protection and the old guy had to scamper up a tree. The bear sniffed around at the bottom of the tree for a while then disappeared. As soon as the old guy was back on the ground the dog takes off and returns a couple of minutes later with the bear in tow. This happened 3 times, and the guy who was being told the story laughed and said, "Bet you kept him tied up after that!" The reply, "Hell no, I shot the SOB, a dog like that could get a man killed!"

That exact thing happened to my father about 4 years ago with a Grizzly and her cub. He was out walking a potential logging block with our lab and the dog went screaming off over a hill. He heard a mighty ruckus and the dog came running back with a sow Grizz on its tail. The as soon as the grizz saw my old man it took off after him. He was in a stand of lodgepole pine postwood so climbing a tree wasn't an option. He took off running with about a 60 yard head start, and said a couple seconds in he heard the dog come back and start harassing the bear. I guess the dog got the bear off my old man because he just kept running till he got back to the truck. The dog, who he thought was dead, came trotting down the trail about 40 minutes later with a #### eating grin on her face. The only reason she didn't get shot is because after she got him in the sh*t, she saved his bacon as well.

Well, as the fellow in Jack O'Connor's book demonstrated, even a .22 rimfire will penetrate to a Grizzlies brain, time after time, without fail. Where a heavy hitting cartridge like a 45-70 405 grain bullet will be preferable is if you are on horseback and the dadgummed horse won't stand still when the Grizzly is on final approach and you are trying to pull off a brain shot ..... then you might miss and take out a shoulder, whereas with a .22 rimfire, you'd be better served by wheeling your horse around and getting out fast. Of course, there's always the chance that if you're a greenhorn rider, the horse suddenly dissappears out from under you, depositing you on the trail ... as you realize that your rifle is in the scabbard, which is on the horse .... heh, heh .... time to say your prayers.:)

You're stretching my memory back to the late '60's but I believe that was the name of the book. The hero of the story moved up to Knight Inlet from Seattle, swapped his .30-30 for a M-71 .348, and if I recall made a living trapping, guiding, and did some timber cruising.
 
Ok, the .45/70 went to a good home in Ontario. I'm gonna miss it because it was a beautiful gun. Regardless, I can't justify keeping a gun I wont shoot...

So the .350 Rem mag is in the safe and needs bases and rings! I bought a Leupold VXIII 1.5X5X20 to put on it and need hardware to get it on there. I want to be able to easily use the iron sights and was thinking of putting on some Warne QD rings. Anyone know where I can buy model 7 bases and Warne QD's???

I've loaded up some rounds but have had no time to go shooting yet, dang... This might replace my .300 WM, depending on accuracy/performance with the 200 grain bullits and will serve me well with the heavier boolits too, I think...
