I noticed the lack of bear defense threads as of late :D

Here is a question.

How fast can you cycle...

I was thinking about bolt actions,..

I have not been a big bolt action user at all. Mostly all levers. So in the case of a bear defense, or even just needing that second shot,..are you quick/slow or somewhere in between.

I am hellish slow with a bolt action, maybe even 2 seconds or more..but with a lever I much faster...

Then I got thinking semis...

The Merkel semis in particular. I fired 40 bullets, and my friend 40 with a Merkel, no hesitation or issues and great accuracy. Over 200 rounds later, still no issue. they seem a semi done right, possibly a good bear gun, though it goes against the "no semi"rule. Quick to aim, good length, etc

Thoughts?

I will have to hope that the rifle goes off when I drop it while trying to run with my pants around my knees trying to clean out my shorts on the fly!!!1:p

Sharp stick.......
Any rifle or shot gun will do.
Why do we debate this so much?
Oh yeah, 'cause every on else is wrong.........12ga?

Talking about sharp sticks. When I was at a buddy’s cabin they had 4 sticks stuck up by the front door they told me when I go to the out house at night take a stick for bear defense. lol.. f**k that I went to my truck and got my old 32bulldog from my glove box of my truck then went to take a s**t. Lol (and the next day we seen a bear in the yard!

Shoot your hunting buddy in the knee and run away. Jammed rifle? Club him over the head, you just have to outrun him. I'm going back to the mountains tommorow, anybody wanna join me? :)

You ass! That was my first beer this weekend.......now the second half of it's on the screen!

It's not just about how fast you can cyucle the action, it'a botu how fast you can get back on target!

45-70 levers are fast to cycle, but may not be back on target as fast a a bolt action 30-06!:p

In 2 areas near my home, I expect to see grizzlies. Therefore I will take a large rifle (375 Ruger these days) . Virtually everywhere else around my home I expect to run into black bears. My choice now is a .45 Colt Trapper Win 94 with 300gr flat nose hard cast bullets.

Either will do the trick on grizz or black bear, but I don't mind the extra power of the .375 if the chips are down.

Guides for grizzly and African dangerous game overwhelmingly choose bolt actions, although some prefer double rifles and a few grizzly guides use lever guns. None of them are bad choices, what is most important is that they be proficient in thier weapon of choice.

BTW, I am about the same for speed with levers or bolts, but the bolt might have the edge.

I can rhyme off 5 45/70 or 450 Marlin pretty fast... and back on target pretty fast...

With a big bolt, like 375 H&H , 8mm mag, etc.. I can still get back on target quick, but the cycling is out the window...

Shooting the 8mm this weekend really showed me how slow I was with it for follow up shots (if needed)

It doesn't really matter how fast you work the action. But you do have to be patient and don't rush the shot. Control your emotions. Shoot slow, quickly. Wait until he's close, at 30' you can brain him or spine him. If you drop to one knee your bullet's trajectory will be on the same plane as his length and shooting from a supported position your shot will be better. Concentrate on the mechanics of the shot. If you shoot standing-off-hand at a target rapidly approaching you, you run the risk of shooting behind it. At the shot, work the action as hard and as fast as you can and be ready to shoot again, but he should be down, if not out. If he's not down it doesn't really matter what you do next.

Ya, I know, it sounds like a contradiction, but really its not. The point was that by the time you need a finishing shot the danger has past. I carried a single shot 12 gauge then later a Ruger #1 for protection over a number of years, and I'm still here. Still, the nice thing about a bolt gun is that you don't have to wait for gas to cycle the action. ;)

This is how fast I can shoot:

Now that the bear is pissed off from all the birdshot I just peppered him with, I'll throw my gun at him and try to outrun YOU!!

:D

Having been bluffed by a grizz personally, my HOPE would be to get one shot off.

The last 2 Grizz atacks on hunters around here (both fatal) were in thick bush.
