decided to go for a hike along an old railroad this morning. this is an old line put in in the 1930s for rail logging. it is well grown up with second growth fir. as i was returning to my truck threr was a large commotion in the bush about 30yds ahead. then a black bear goes up a treeoff the left of the trail. a few seconds later a second bear goes up another tree. these where about 2yr olds I thought they could be on threr own or mum could be there in the bush. one bear went about half way up but the other went as high as it could go. the one at the top of the tree must have lookrd down and decided it was scared of heights or something because it started to squeal and howl as loud as it could. I was carrying my combination gun 12gauge over .308win. I removed the birdshot from the 12gauge and put in 00buck. then slowly moved on up the trail past the trees hopeing if mum was there she would stay in the bush. I made it past without incident the bear in the treetop hollering the whole time. I had about 200yds to go to my truck and that bear was still howling when i got to the truck. I am on the west coast where bear are abundant but have never heard one carry on like that before.

It's the new 'Leet Uber Bear defence weapon: the mama was sh!tting herself outta fear of it she refused to move outta the bushes!!!!!!!
No wonder the poor guy up the tree was blar'n like crazy: you had the 12 over .308, yeah baby !!!!

Just don't pull both triggers at once...Just kidding though. I'm sure it is set up like my Savage combo gun were its single trigger and you have a selector. What make is the gun?

Perhaps as an improvement over the infamous "bear defence" threads, it would be more constructive if we had a CGN "bear encounter" thread, where people could describe their experiences over and above the wild speculation about what they'd need to protect themselves from them. I'm all for practicing due diligence by carrying a reasonably appropriate firearm when in bear country, but think we could learn alot more by discussing real encounters.
Little did the OP know, That the mother bear was actually hiding behind his truck waiting for him to get there, but she heard her son yelling out what he had for a rifle, she heard "combo, 12guage over .308" and got the hell outta there before she wound up in the back of the truck.
