Bear gun build?

I built a bear gun like that auto 5 on a Belgian A5. It would not shoot two slugs near each other for love nor money. Threw buckshot great. I blamed the recoiling barrel for the slug woes.

I tried to skip fire one the other day in a safe area and it worked fairly well. The distance was reduced by about 25 feet but as you say... unpredictable. Mine kept going straight but the way they spin it could come back under the right circumstances.

Your welcome. When I got this gun, it had less than 25 rounds through it
in it's lifetime.:eek: A co-worker's dad had the thing all these years and
did'nt even shoot off a whole box.
When I tore 'er down, it was basically as new with just a bit of old
oil & dust on the innards and the metal was as new, barely seated in.
I shortened the barrel to 20" and re-faced the muzzle and stoned the crown.
I also replaced the recoil spring, action spring and friction collar.
It's my favorite woods gun.:)
 
On a side, but related note, how many have seen what happens with a perfect shot with a 1oz 12ga slug to a bear's vitals? I'm sure Boomer has. The results aren't what you might think, typical reaction is to run off 20 yards, and ball up then die within about 60 seconds. 60 seconds is a long bloody time if it counts... You can not count on a 12 ga, a .45-70, even a .375 H&H or .470 Nitro to stop a bear "right now", especially with survival situation shooting and an amped sow defending cubs etc. Without a CNS hit, nearly impossible under real conditions of a surprise attack, you are going to die or get very badly hurt. The best bear defence is to be bear aware or "smart", and avoiding encounters in the first place. We're too heavily gunned and too lightly educated here I feel.
 
i didnt bother to read this whole thing.. but Im wondering, what bore size is needed to chamber a bear? Are we shooting cubs? adults? blacks or browns? what kinda powder works best? single shot, semi, pump? which works best and is dependable when you really need to shoot a bear?..Can I maybe base one on a DA Grizz reciever?

I bet an RPG would do the trick. Gaping entrance wound in the chest, 400-500 lbs of what will later be described as "hamburger" removed from rear half and strewn over a 50 yd track to the rear...what do you think a CO would say about that? Would he even have words to describe it in his report?? I wonder if you could get an ATC for an RPG, provided you could prove you actually need one. I know I need one. :)
 
A gunsmith once told me this when I questioned him about the 'Defender', which was a pistol grip 12 ga. pump. He said the guys carrying them for protection brought them in and had full stocks put on. The short pistol grip stocks were very innaccurate according to these guys. We live in bear country radically different than Boomer's. It is bush with very low visibility range. Bear spray can be effective, some people use bangers around here but they are not overly popular. The gun shot equals bear looking for gut pile response is now a factor around here and is one of the more dangerous situations you can find yourself in. Carcass defence can make bears very aggressive. James Gary Shelton has some excellent books on the subject. I walk in bear country every day and rarely see one. My dog wears a bell and I think that has something to do with it. The old joke around here is that they are dinner bells. Dogs do prevent surprise attacks. If one is coming right at you, aim for the chin. If you see a carcass remove yourself, preferably the way you went in. Warning shots are a waste of time IMHO. A little bear story from last moose season. (This is a third hand story so keep that in mind). Two guys were up in some remote country and knocked over a moose. They were approached by a grizzly. They fired warning shots, it kept coming. They put it down. Two more came at them. (my guess is a family group) They were out of bullets(remember the warning shots). They started gumbooting back to their truck. The old joke about only being a faster runner than the guy next to you when it comes to outrunning a bear came into play. One guy was overweight and one of the bears was going to nail him before he reached the truck but the bear decided to peel off. Two very lucky guys and both wishing they brought extra underwear on this particular trip. Boomer's country with the polar bears is a whole other issue. I have no personal experience with polar bears but understand they are more likely to prey on us than the other species. Do not sleep with food near you is probably one the most abused rules of camping.
 
I just finished up another bear gun build with this early Model 1400 Winchester.
This is a light, easy to carry & fast swinging gun that will do just fine for the
black bears encountered on Van Isle.

Gun features a Limbsaver pad, 19" cylinder bore, Flex-Honed barrel w/lengthened
forcing cone and topped with Vang Comp ghost ring sights. Trigger is tuned to 3 lbs.

The handloads I'll be using in this gun will feature 525 gr. slugs from my Lyman
mould in #2 alloy, and be driven at 1200 fps. This will do the job on any critter
encountered in these parts inside of 80 yds. ;)

With the 12.5", you will be under the 26" OAL for non-restricted. With the 14" (like many HP9s), many pistol grips will also be too short; try a Shockwave Technology birds head to ensure at least 26.5"

On the plus side, a 14" barrel allows for a +1 extension.
