The 505 will do em!

Best Bear Gun

Fish and Wildlife Officers and serious Guides all say a 12G shotgun hands down. Slugs and 00 buck will drop anything with ease especially if you are being charged by a bear.

Randy

Randyhub.......sorry but that is bunk.

Serious guides do not pick a 12 gauge and F&W officers that have any choice or know what they are talking about don't either.

There is a field study that was done in Alaska and printed her before that puts the 12 gauge way down the list.

You are spouting what you have been told, not what you have any experience in. Actually it is obvious you have ZERO real bear experience.

Ah, shooting a handful of black bears is what I call ZERO bear experience.

I will be sure to pass that on to my buddy who is a Wildlife Officer. Funny how you think a slug won't effect a bear much, here is a tree I used to sight in my bear gun on. I have backpacked for many years and nothing sway me from sighted in slug gun. Guess a 3" magnum slug is not that powerful.;)

You should really do your homework first.

From the Web:

Where does the Shotgun Slug rate in hitting power among big guns as
legend has it these guns are heavy hitters?

Using the Ballistics Data from the Remington Catalog the following specs
for the 12 guage slug are:

45-70 Gov at 100 yards
Mass = 405 Velocity = 1168
Kinetic Pulse = 2576 kp
Kinetic Energy = 1226 ft-lb
Momentum = 2.100 slug ft/s
ENERGY/MOMENTUM = 583

.444 Marlin at 100 yards
Mass = 240 Velocity = 1815
Kinetic Pulse = 3395 kp
Kinetic Energy = 1755 ft-lb
Momentum = 1.934 slug ft/s
ENERGY/MOMENTUM = 907

12 guage slug shotgun 1 oz load at 100 yards
Mass = 437 Velocity = 1283
Kinetic Pulse = 3976 kp <--------------
Kinetic Energy = 1597 ft-lb
Momentum = 2.489 slug ft/s
ENERGY/MOMENTUM = 786

One last one to make a point.

The 12ga loaded with 00 was are number one bear gun and it works ,but i want something new and the 45-70 or a 450marlin are sounding pretty good right now, never been charged and hope i never do ,but in a case like that i can see how a shotgun would be nice but i can also see the side of shooting something like 375H&H or 416Rem would be nice to. A 12ga with 00 you dont have to aim as much just point it but the energy from a largerbore would put him down in a hurry i guess it comes down to what kind of shooter you are , Are you smooth and have guts of steel and hold your ground well and large unhappy animal is trying to remove you or are you running away shooting over your shoulder trying to make it to the truck before you become dinner. For around here im think a 450marlin but up there in the yukon i would want a 416rem or something along that line.

Don't mix all bears together; black bears do not have particularly heavy bones and are not that hard to put down. Yes, I do speak from personal experience.

When Alaska and mountain areas are the topic, we are more likely to be talking either browns or grizzlies, which are Macs and kenworths compared to the black as a pick up truck. Go far enough north and you have the privelge of being eaten by a polar bear, again, a completely different animal.

Read up the literature on bear attacks, and make sure that what you read has documented background; there are a lot of myths around.

As for the best gun for a black bear, the easiest way to find out is go and ask one, it will probably vary from bear to bear, some prefering heavy calibers and others prefering to do without and hunt primitively as their ancestors did.

So true

Everyone's needs are different. Mine are a short compact bush gun, hence my peference for a 12G sidefolder. The bush I go into never seems to have a clearing more than 35 yards across but up north I guess the range is much greater. I have a 6 shot 12 guage, 1st shot is 00 buck followed by hollowpoint sabot copper slugs. The slugs group tight but are punishing. That cedar tree I shot had shots going right thru it and it actually split the tree!! When I shot into firm mud the hollowpoints blew a hole a meter across. So I guess it boils down to peference no one person has the answers, none of us know everything.

well I guess we could spend hours arguing this but its not correct information for an overall count of guides and CO's canada wide ;)

Point taken, I guess none of us have interviewed all guides and Wildlife Officers, and as Canada differs so much in terrain and predators, I guess whatever works works.:)

I know where there's a 12 gauge Ithaca Deerslayer with scope and sling going for a decent price. I think you talked me into buying it. If nothing else, it would make a great backup bear gun. Thanks for the info.

My bush gun

Here is my bush gun a tuned copy of the M37 ($229.00) , it was very rough cycling until I worked all internals and used MilTech lube. I also installed a laser for use in dense dark forest and dusk/dawn. Here is one of the slugs I use and a metal plate it bent when it was hit with the slug. The .223 FMJ just burned thru it but didn't even move the plate unlike the slug which sent it downrange end over end.

You are welcome John, sometimes the facts are hard to argue. I really love some of the calibres mentioned but I will just stay with my tried and true slug gun, as ammunition has become very advanced now for the 12 gauge.

This kife again :rolleyes: This is blackpowder pressure loads for old Trapdoors. Try 1800 ft/sec cast velocities or 2000 ft/sec for jacketed 405gr bullets (modern lever action) and crunch them numbers again ;)

More guns

Yeah, reloading makes all the difference with .45-70. A friend let me have a go with his Ruger #1 and hot reloads and it's just too much fun. That Ruger is a strong action and just the thing for custom loads. Must...buy...Ruger...45-70!

When I guided and had to go into the thick stuff after a wounded black, it was with a SXS 12 guage with 18" barrels
Both barrels if needed at the same time from a close range is VERY effective, I am saying this from experience.

You can knock a bear right out of a cabin door with a 12 gauge from 10 feet away if he falls backward !:D

What kind of caliber and gun would you pick for close range black bears in saskachewan ? Im thinking 45-70, 444marlin or 450marlin in a short fast handling gun , is there any other good bigbore calibers i should take a look at? Most of the bears being shoot will be in are bee yards and most shots are between 10-50 yard or so , We already use 30-06 ,308win and a 12ga but i want something new .

thanks

The 30-30 in a Win. 94 will serve your purpose to perfection
